Bethany Standout Seth Kauffman First To Sign For 2010-11
November 20, 2009
GOSHEN, Ind. – Just weeks into the 2009-10 basketball season, Goshen College men’s basketball coach Gary Chupp has already added to next year’s roster with his first signing of the 2010 class as Bethany Christian High School standout Seth Kauffman signed a letter of intent.
The 6-foot, 4-inch forward averaged 18.3 points and 7.4 rebounds a game as a junior for Coach Jim Buller and the Bruins, who finished the 2008-09 season 15-9.
“We are excited that Seth has decided to join our basketball family and I anticipate him making a big impact over the course of his career, both on the court and in the classroom,” Chupp said. “Coming out of Jim’s program, I know Seth will have a very high basketball IQ and a real passion for the game.”
A force on both ends of the floor for Bethany, Kauffman shot an incredible 67.6% from inside the 3-point circle to go with team high’s in steals (53) and blocked shots (43).
“I think with his length and explosiveness, we will be able to play him both in the post and on the perimeter,” Chupp explained. “He can really attack the rim and with added strength, he will give us a presence on the boards as well.”
Named the team’s Best Offensive Player last season, Kauffman also had a standout sophomore season. The forward put up 11.7 points and 5.1 rebound numbers two years ago while still an underclassman and has twice been named to the All Area team.
“Seth is a tremendous competitor who has a real desire to play the game,” said Buller, who is in his 31st season at Bethany. “He brings excellent leadership in challenging and encouraging teammates as well. His determination to succeed helps set him apart from most players.”
His determination has also led him to success off the court. Kauffman is on the honor roll and received the Grebel Academic Award.
“I chose Goshen because I felt comfortable as soon as I got on campus and the team atmosphere felt good,” Kauffman said of his decision. “I enjoy the style of play the team runs and am looking forward to having my parents and grandparents getting the chance to come watch me play at the college level.”
Kauffman still has his senior season at Bethany to look forward to, but the Maple Leaf coaching staff is already looking forward to a bright future in 2010-11 with Kauffman on the court.
