Maple Leafs sweep RedHawks in earlier than planned 2010 home opener... UPDATE: Sunday's game time moved

UPDATE: Sunday’s single game against Ohio Northern University has been changed to a double header beginning at 1:30 p.m.

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen College baseball team took advantage of an earlier than expected home opener as they took both ends of a double header against visiting Indiana University – Northwest Tuesday afternoon.

The Maple Leafs added the contest after having a four-game series in Tennessee and Kentucky washed out over the weekend. They made the most of it as the offense busted out for 24 runs in 13-3 and 11-1 wins.

While the final scorelines obviously favored Goshen, neither game got off to particularly fast starts for the home team. In the opener, the RedHawks struck first with a single run in the top of the second. The Maple Leafs answered in the bottom of the frame as freshman Andrew Brawley knocked in Garrett Cannizzo, who doubled with two outs.

Heading into the third tied at 1-1, IU – Northwest rallied for two more runs. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the third, though, Goshen’s offense finally sparked. A leadoff single by freshman Corey Johnson set the tone for what became a 10-run inning for the Maple Leafs.

Sophomore Andy Swisher was hit by a pitch twice in the frame, but the biggest blows came off the bat of junior Zach Reed. The third baseman hit a pair of doubles in the inning, knocking in a total of five runs.

With a huge 11-3 lead, senior starting pitcher Matt Fyfe settled in for his final inning of work in the fourth to gain the win. Classmate Caleb Kitchell came on for two innings of scoreless relief before the game ended in the bottom of the sixth on the 10-run rule.

Goshen added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jordan Short before adding their final run with two outs in the sixth on an RBI single by Johnson.

Much like the first game, IU – Northwest gained an early lead with a run in the top of the first. This time around, it took the Maple Leafs only until the second to respond. They scored four runs each in the second and third innings to jump to another healthy lead.

The second inning was highlighted by a bases clearly, 3-run double by Johnson, while the third saw senior Josh Yates hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.

Senior Kraig Miller struck out four in his four innings of work and earned his first win of the season. Classmate Aaron Coy came on to pitch the fifth in the contest, which ended with no outs in the bottom of the fifth.

On the day, Reed went 5-for-7 with four doubles and six RBIs. Johnson equaled Reed’s RBI total with four hits in six at bats. Sophomore Garrett Cannizzo went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs on the day, while Brawley ended the day 4-for-7, also with two RBIs.

The Maple Leafs have also added a single game against Siena Heights University on Thursday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

Goshen can't get over the hump, swept by Trinity International

Senior Sean Sears was 6-for-13 with 6 RBIs in the four-game series

LAKELAND and SARASOTA, Fla. – The Goshen College baseball team finished their annual Spring Break trip to Florida with a four-game series against Trinity International University (Ill.) Friday and Saturday.

The series spanned two different Florida cities and saw a four-hour rain delay on Saturday. While the Maple Leafs were in striking range in each of the four games, they were unable to pull out any wins on way to completing their week-long trip with a 2-5 mark.

Game 1: Trinity 11, Goshen 7 (Stats)

Goshen and Trinity started the series on Friday at Lakeland’s Henley Field, the former Spring Training home of the Detroit Tigers. In game one, the Maple Leafs struck first as a Zach Reed two-run double gave Goshen a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Trojans exploded for five runs in the third, though, as they took hold of a 5-2 advantage. Goshen pulled back within one in the bottom of the frame after Sean Sears was hit by a pitch, Zac Miller doubled and they were brought in by a sacrifice fly and an error.

With a 5-4 lead in the fourth, Trinity took advantage of a Maple Leaf bullpen that is still looking to find its rhythm early in the year. The Trojans put up five more runs in the fourth on just three hits to build a 10-4 lead.

Down 11-5, Goshen rallied in the seventh. The Leafs started the inning with back-to-back doubles by freshman Luke Hucker and Sears. Two batters later, Reed doubled home another run. Still down four, Goshen was able to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate before Trinity shut the door for the series opening 11-7 win.

Reed and Sears had two hits each, while Reed tallied four RBIs for Goshen.

Game 2: Trinity 5, Goshen 3 (Stats)

The Trojans were the ones to jump out early in game two as they scored a single run in the first and two more in the second. After struggling out of the gate, senior starter Matt Fyfe settled in and held Trinity off the board until the fifth.

Goshen pulled a run back in the fourth on a Trinity error, but the Trojans immediately tacked two more on in the fifth to go up 5-1. After scoring once in the sixth, the Leafs again tried to rally in the seventh. This time, they placed the tying run at second before eventually falling 5-3. Hucker and senior Josh Yates each went 2-for-3, while Reed tallied two more RBIs.

Game 3: Trinity 8, Goshen 3 (Stats)

The series switched to Sarasota Christian High School on Saturday as the teams endured a four-hour rain delay before starting game one. Trinity again scored early, bringing two runs across the plate in the first inning.

Goshen cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third, but the Trojans put up a total of five runs on just three hits in the fifth and six innings. The only consolation for the Leafs late in the game was a two-run blast by Sears to put the final scoreline at 8-3. Sears finished the game 3-for-4 and knocked in all three Goshen runs.

Game 4: Trinity 10, Goshen 5 (Stats)

The series finale saw the Trojans again take advantage of Goshen’s mistakes. Trinity scored four in the third (on three hits), three in the fifth (two hits) and three in the seventh (two hits) as they took advantage of nine walks and five hit batters.

The Leafs again were able to put together some offensive production late in the game. They scored three times in the fifth on the back of a two-run double by sophomore Andy Swisher. They then added a single run in the sixth on a Mike Zehr sacrifice and one in the seventh on a Sears’ double, but it was not enough to avoid the sweep.

Davis, Coy lead Goshen past host Clearwater; Leafs fall to WIU on Tuesday

Sophomore Shane Davis

CLEARWATER, Fla. (Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2) – The Goshen College baseball team used a pair of outstanding starting pitching efforts to pick up a double-header sweep of Clearwater Christian College and start its seven-game Florida road trip with two victories Monday evening.

In the opener, senior Aaron Coy was strong early keeping the host Cougars at bay. The right-hander struck out six in the first five innings as the two teams went into the sixth inning scoreless.

Goshen finally broke through in the top of the sixth as sophomore Garrett Cannizzo singled home freshman Corey Johnson, who started the inning with a single. The Leafs would tally another run in the inning and added three more in the top of the seventh.

Down 5-0, the host Cougars made things interesting in the seventh as they took advantage of two walks and two hit batters for four runs. With the potential winning run on second, senior shortstop Kraig Miller shut the door with a clutch play up the middle for the final out and Goshen’s first win of the season.

The Leafs used the momentum to gain an early lead in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the first and another in the second. The three-run first was highlighted by an RBI double by Cannizzo, while senior Zac Miller knocked in the Goshen run in the second with a single up the middle.

Meanwhile, righty Shane Davis looked very strong on the hill. The sophomore did not give up a hit until the fourth and ended the night with 11 strike outs.

He did have to work out of trouble a few times, however, including the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Davis promptly made a nice play on a slow chopper to cut down a runner and the plate and then induced an inning ending 4-6-3 double play to preserve his shutout.

Goshen added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by freshman Luke Hucker and another in the seventh on doubles by Kraig Miller and Zach Reed. Davis finished off the complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits for his first win of the season.

Seven different Maple Leafs tallied a hit in the nightcap and five players had RBIs. Senior designated hitter Zac Miller was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI on the night.

BABSON PARK, Fla. (Box Score) – A day after the sweep, the Maple Leafs came out strong against a solid Webber International squad. Goshen opened the scoring in the top of the second on a run scoring double by freshman Andrew Brawley before adding another in the second after a leadoff triple by freshman Luke Hucker.

In the bottom of the third, though, the hosts took charge. The Warriors pounded out four hits and took advantage of five free passes in the inning to score six times and take the 6-2 lead.

Despite Webber adding a single run in the bottom of the fifth, the Leafs did not go away. Goshen scored twice in the sixth on RBI doubles by senior’s Zac Miller and Sean Sears to pull back within three (7-4) late in the game.

In a game that was much closer than the final scoreline, the hosts had another big inning in the seventh and went on for a 14-4 win. Sears finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Miller and junior Zach Reed each came up with two hits.

Goshen is back in action on Friday as they start a four-game series against Trinity International University (Ill.).

First-year players get their feet wet as Leafs swept in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – With as many as six first-year college players in the starting lineup and a total of 15 making their college debuts, it would be safe to say that the 2010 Maple Leaf baseball team is youthful.

The lack of collegiate experience was a major factor as Goshen was swept in a four-game series over the weekend at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The Leafs opponent, the University of Sioux Falls (SD), committed just two errors and batted .351 over the four game set. A veteran ball club, the Cougars returned six starters and the majority of their pitching staff from last season.

Game 1 – USF 9, Goshen 2 – Box Score

Starting shortly after the Super Bowl ended, the Maple Leafs had the first offensive threat in the top of the first of game one. With two outs, junior Zach Reed was hit by a pitch for the game’s first base runner. Senior Kraig Miller and sophomore Garrett Cannizzo followed with singles to load the bases, but Goshen was unable to capitalize.

Sioux Falls cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs despite posting just one hit. The Cougars opened the inning with a walk and then took advantage of a Maple Leaf error to score their first run before adding another on an RBI ground out.

Senior Aaron Coy (0-1) struck out six and gave up just one earned run before exiting after the fourth inning. Goshen was able to get on the board in the sixth after Reed was hit by another pitch. After stealing second base, Miller drove an RBI triple to deep right-center field. Cannizzo followed quickly with his second hit of the game, an RBI single up the middle.

That was all the offense could muster, though, as Sioux Falls pulled away late behind a rough outing by the Goshen bullpen. After Coy, the Leafs gave up seven runs on nine hits in the 9-2 loss.

Game 2 – USF 8, Goshen 2 – Box Score

Playing as the home team for the second game of the series, Goshen starter Matt Fyfe got the Leafs off to a good start by shutting the Cougars down in 1-2-3 fashion in the first. Goshen was in even better shape when senior designated hitter Zac Miller led off the bottom of the inning with a triple down the right-field line. Miller would eventually score on a double steal to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead, which remained until the third inning.

A pair of walks and three USF hits in the third allowed them to take a 3-1 advantage. Goshen pulled a run back in the sixth as freshman Corey Johnson tripled and Kraig Miller hit a clutch two-out, two-strike single up the middle.

A one-run game heading into the seventh, the Cougars busted out for five runs to give them clearance. Kraig Miller had his second-straight multi-hit game for Goshen in the 8-2 loss.

Game 3 – USF 13, Goshen 3 – Box Score

The Maple Leafs again started strong by taking a three-run lead in the second. In his first start, freshman Luke Hucker ripped an RBI single to left and Johnson knocked another in with a fielder’s choice.

Sophomore starting pitcher Shane Davis looked strong early, but got in trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. The Goshen staff struggled to find the strike zone late and were not helped by a shaky Leaf defense. The game ended in the sixth as Goshen ended the contest with seven walks surrendered and four errors.

Game 4 – USF 9, Goshen 5 – Box Score

Unlike the previous two games, it was Sioux Falls that jumped ahead early in the series finale. The Cougars scored twice in the first, once in the second, and six times in the third to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

Goshen’s lone run through the first five innings came on back-to-back doubles by Reed and Cannizzo to lead off the second. The Leafs added three more runs in the sixth as five straight batters reached base before threatening again in the seventh. The first four reached in the seventh bringing the tying run to the plate, but USF was able to close the door for the 9-5 win.

On the weekend, Cannizzo went 5-for-11 (.455) and Kraig Miller racked up four hits in 11 at bats (.444). As a team, though, Goshen hit just .224.

Goshen gets two weeks off before their annual Spring Break trip to Florida. The Leafs will play seven games on the trip, primarily in Clearwater and Sarasota.

GOSHEN, Ind. – Despite frigid temperatures lingering around the Midwest, the 2010 Goshen College Baseball season opener is just around the corner. The Maple Leafs will open up this weekend as they make their second trip to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.

Injuries ravaged the 2009 squad as they were shorthanded for nearly all of their 11-45 record. The biggest incoming class of fifth-year head coach Josh Keister’s tenure, though, has Goshen baseball fans excited about the future of the program.

With the season opener quickly approaching, Keister gives us a look at what to expect.

Pitching Overview

Senior Aaron Coy

The Maple Leafs pitching staff will be heavy on upperclassman this year with five seniors, two juniors, and a sophomore making up eight of the top 10 on the staff. Aaron Coy showed this fall that he’s is prepared to have a breakout senior year after being inconsistent at times as a junior and will move into the No. 1 spot in the rotation after being used some out of the bullpen last year.

Senior Kraig Miller will move from his spot at shortstop over to first base so he can join the rotation where he will be complimented by fellow senior Matt Fyfe and sophomore Shane Davis. Junior college transfer Omar Hernandez will handle the back end of the bullpen along with classmate Zach Reed. Seniors Joel King and Caleb Kitchell will provide valuable middle relief, while a group of promising freshman will also get quality innings this year. They include Ben Diedring – the only lefty on the staff – along with righties Spencer Oversen, Moises Ramirez, and Lance Good. Sophomore Jason Crocker had shoulder surgery over the winter and might be available by mid season depending on quickly rehab goes.

Coach Keister’s Pre-Season Pitching Evaluation

“Our pitching is going to be a key for us this year. We have outstanding depth and talent, but must be consistent which has been our achilles heal in the past. Aaron Coy has had outstanding strikeout numbers the past couple of years (61 K’s in 51.3 IP last year) but has been inconstant over the course of a whole season. An incredible work ethic on his strength and conditioning starting at the end of last season paid huge dividends this fall and could help him get an opportunity to pitch at the next level after this season.”

“Matt Fyfe had some things click for him late in the year last year and was outstanding this fall. Kraig Miller has always been one of our best competitors on the mound and by moving him to first base he has been able to work off the mound a lot more and will be a fixture in the rotation. Shane Davis was our best pitcher at times last year and has showed that form this winter. Having confidence in two guys at the back end will be huge as Omar Hernandez and Zach Reed have some of the best stuff on the staff. We have the luxury this year of being able to establish some roles and hopefully guys will embrace that and feed of each other in putting together a successful season.”

Infield Overview

The Maple Leaf infield will have a much different and much younger look in 2010. Senior Kraig Miller will move from shortstop – where he has started for three years – to first base. Zach Reed has been cleared to play after being on the DL since six games into last season. He will use his versatility to play second, third, and first at times this year. Freshman Andrew Brawley will lock down the shortstop position with freshman Brett Hunter to his right at third base. Freshman Clay Norris and Luke Hucker will both get some time at second base. Senior Josh Yates and freshman Caleb Yoder will also see time at first base. Mike Milligan played the middle of the infield this fall but will have to help out in the outfield as well.

Coach Keister’s pre-season infield evaluation

“Although we are obviously very young in the infield we are pretty talented as well. The infield will have a completely different look than it did the majority of the year last year so it is still a little bit of an unknown commodity. We have much better depth this year but still must stay healthy. Our two upperclassman Kraig Miller and Zach Reed both missed the majority of the year last year. Their health will be key both defensively and what they provide at the plate. Zach put up incredible numbers in 6 games last year all against ranked opponents (.421 BA, 3 2B) so it is exciting to see how that could translate out over the course of a season. Kraig managed to put together 97 AB’s last year but most of those came with a torn meniscus in his knee. His health will be a key for us offensively, defensively, and on the mound. Our freshman have a lot of talent but must prepare themselves for the demands of a 50-plus game schedule both physically and mentally. How they handle themselves in adversity will be a major factor in the success of the team this year.”

Outfield Overview

Sophomore Andy Swisher will play all three outfield positions over the course of the season although he will probably get more time if left than the other two. Transfer Jordan Short had a sensational fall offensively and defensively and will get the starting nod in center field. Freshman Corey Johnson took firm control of right field this fall despite never having played there before. His foot speed and arm strength will be a huge asset defensively. Garrett Cannizzo will get some time in left field when he is not the designated hitter in the lineup and Mike Milligan will provide some much needed depth along with Mike Zehr.

Coach Keister’s pre-season outfield evaluation

“One of the strengths of last year’s team was Swisher’s defense in center field, so that fact that he is moving to left says a lot about the potential of this year’s group. This will hands down be the best outfield defense we have had in the last decade. Keeping legs healthy will be a key and getting offensive production will be important as well.”

Catcher Overview

Sean Sears will be starting his fourth year as the Maple Leafs’ primary starter behind the plate. His arm strength has been a huge asset in controlling the running game but he has worn down late in the season the last couple years. There is plenty of depth behind him this year in freshman Benjamin Kelly, Corey Johnson, and Nathan Stanley, along with sophomore Garrett Cannizzo.

Coach Keister’s pre-season catcher’s evaluation

“Sears had a breakout season offensively last year (.315 BA, 8 2B, 2 HR) and has looked even better this fall and this winter. Keeping him fresh over the course of the year will be important so that his production continues to be solid late in the year. We have great competition for the spots after him and I look for that to make everybody better.”

Designated Hitter Overview

We have a lot of competition and depth at this spot this year. Garrett Cannizzo and Zach Miller were two of our best hitters last year and both will get a lot of time at designated hitter. Sean Sears will get some at bat’s there when he is not catching and Josh Yates and Caleb Yoder have the talent to get hot and provide some quality at bat’s at this position as well.

Coach Keister’s pre-season DH evaluation

“We will be able to ride the hot hand at designated hitter due to the amount of talent and depth we have at this position. Guys need to understand that they need to stay hot to stay in the lineup and embracing that competition will be key to our team dynamic. I expect big things from this position this year.”

COACH KEISTER’S OVERALL TEAM OUTLOOK

“Following the Metrodome, we will still have several different weeks of indoor practices in between our weekend trips and we must stay motivated during those times and continue to improve. Our goal is to be playing our best baseball during the end of the season. We were able to do that last year despite some devastating injuries during the course of the year. Although our depth is significantly better at every position this year, staying healthy will still be a key for us. Based on our struggles the last couple of years, we need to win some games early to build a little confidence and if we do that we have enough talent to be in the thick of things in the MCC. A unique balance of seniors and freshman will create some interesting team dynamics and we must handle that well for us to be successful. If we play hard and stay mentally tough and focused this should be a fun year.”

Two runs in bottom of the seventh enough for Gray to take inaugural title

More photos available at www.facebook.com/GCMapleLeafs

GOSHEN, Ind. – Even though their regular season is still months away, the Goshen College baseball team has been hard at work this fall preparing for what promises to be an exciting spring season with an excellent blend of experienced veterans and talented incoming class.

On Wednesday, their fall came to a close in the First Annual Gray & Purple Fall Classic. The one game – winner takes all – contest was led by senior captains who also served as their teams coaches. They were responsible for a closed door player draft on Monday, a team practice Tuesday, as well as all game management decisions Wednesday. The players also wore throwback jerseys from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

The gray team – led by player/coaches Aaron Coy and Josh Yates – rallied from one-run down twice and scored twice in the bottom of the seventh before holding on for a 3-2 win in the inaugural event.

Both starting picthers cruised as players struggled to adjust to the ice cold temperatures outside. Purple starter, freshman Ben Diedring did not give up a hit in his 2 2/3 innings of hitless work before he reached the game’s maximum pitch count of 45. Gray starter, sophomore Shane Davis was equal to the task as he fired two scoreless frames.

The purple team – behind player/coaches Sean Sears and Kraig Miller – took the early lead in the third inning. After sophomore Andy Swisher walked and reached second on a wild pitch, freshman third baseman Brett Hunter got an RBI single to right field for the game’s opening run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the gray team knotted the game up at 1-1 as freshman catcher Nathan Stanley doubled, stole third, and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Pre-game speed up rules allowed for any inning after the seventh to start with a runner on first base. The purple team used some small ball to take advantage of the rules and take the lead once again. After a drag-bunt single by freshman Corey Johnson, Swisher sacrificed the pair of runners into scoring position, while also being able to reach base on a fielding error. Senior Zac Miller then laid down another perfect bunt as the purple team squeezed home their go-ahead run. They could not, however, push another run across the board and the game moved to the bottom of the 7th.

With the tying run placed on first to start the inning, freshman shortstop Andrew Brawley ripped a double to left-center to tie the game at 2-2. After two outs were recorded, sophomore outfielder Tyler Parsons delivered an RBI single as the gray team moved ahead for the first time.

Senior right-hander Matt Fyfe had come out of the bullpen in the 7th and came up huge for his team as he threw three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. Coy also was strong on the mound for the gray team, going 2 1/3 scoreless frames in the middle innings.

The entire team will now focus on off-season workouts before beginning full-team practice again in January.

Powerful Trojans Bats Knock Maple Leafs Off In Two Games

UPAND, Ind. (4/27)
vs. Taylor University

The thirty-plus mile per hour winds blowing straight out to center field did not help the Maple Leafs early as they faced one of the strongest hitting teams in the conference in a Mid-Central College Conference Tournament Play-In Series on Monday.

The Trojans hit five home runs and added seven more extra-base hits in game one as they ran off with a 24-8 win. The managed to score in each of the six innings in which they batted.

The Goshen offense did have some solid showings against Trojan starter Taylor Kinzer, who came in with a perfect 6-0 record. The Leafs plated two runs in the first, two in the fifth, and four in the seventh.

The fifth-inning runs came on a two-run home run by sophomore Adam Zehr, the first of his career. In the seventh, freshman Andy Swisher hit the first run of his career, a two-run shot to center.

Game two was a completely different game.

After giving up a solo shot to Paul Passiales in the first inning, Goshen starter Matt Fyfe settled in t pitch his best and most complete game of the season. He gave up just seven hits and three earned runs over eight innings.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs got two runs in the second on back-to-back home runs by freshman Garrett Cannizzo and senior Tom McDowell. However, Matt Kirkendale and Chris Howell came out of Taylor’s bullpen to keep Goshen scoreless from the third through the seventh.

Junior Zac Miller ripped an RBI double to left field in the top of the eighth inning, but that was all Goshen could muster as its season ended with a 4-3 defeat.

Goshen Splits With Lancers; Swept By Indiana Wesleyan To Finish MCC Play

WINONA LAKE, Ind. (4/25)
vs. Grace College

It was a wild and windy day in Winona Lake as the Maple Leafs and Lancers battled to a double-header split in their only match ups of the season.

In game one, it was a spectacular outing by freshman Shane Davis (Elkhart, Ind.) that proved to be the difference. Davis scattered five hits and two runs over seven innings, while striking out a career high nine batters.

Despite Davis’ efforts early, the Leafs trailed 2-0 going into the fifth as the offense struggled to get rolling. After a Greg Meyer (Muskegan, Mich.) sacrifice fly brought Goshen within one after five innings, the Leafs really rallied in the sixth.

In the top of the sixth, junior Zac Miller (Centreville, Mich.) blasted an inside fastball well over the left-field fence for a two-run home run – the first of his career – and Goshen was up 5-2. The Leafs offense then broke out with three more runs in the inning and another in the seventh as they took the opener 7-2.

Down 2-0 again in game two, Goshen put together another five-run inning in the third sparked by a three-run home run by freshman Garrett Cannizzo (Arlington Heights, Ill.).

Grace, however, climbed back within a single run before rallying for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 12-5 lead.

Unwilling to go down easily, the Leafs put together a rally of their own in the seventh. With one out and nobody on, the comeback was on. Eight straight batters reached base as Goshen tallied seven runs to tie the game at 12-12. Unfortunately, Grace rallied again in the bottom of the inning to push across the game winner in a thrilling 12-13 contest.

MARION, Ind. (4/15)
vs. Indiana Wesleyan University

The Maple Leafs traveled to Indiana Wesleyan University and were a bit shorthanded early on as student-athletes finished final exams throughout the afternoon.

The Wildcats took advantage as they jumped out with seven runs in the first two innings of game one. It was a shaky Goshen defense that contributed to the start as the Leafs committed four errors in the opener.

Meanwhile, Wesleyan starter Josh Worrell shut down the Goshen offense, allowing just one hit over his six innings of work as the Wildcats won 9-1.

The nightcap – in this case very late nightcap with the game starting after 8:00 p.m. – was much of the same. Four Maple Leaf errors helped Indiana Wesleyan to seven runs in the second as they went on for another 9-1 win.

The Goshen offense did get rolling with nine hits, but struggled to string them together. Adam Zehr, Zac Miller, Tom McDowell, and Garrett Cannizzo had two each for the Leafs.
