Head Coach Gary Chupp
Gary Chupp begins his third season as head coach of Goshen College in 2009-2010 following a historical 19-12 record in his first season and a 15-16 mark at the helm of the Maple Leafs last year.
Chupp arrived after a nine-year stint as Bethel College (Kansas) head coach, posting an overall record of 123-136 and a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference mark of 84-74. Chupp becomes Goshen’s 13th head coach in the program’s 53-year history.
In his nine seasons as head coach, Chupp led the Bethel Threshers to KCAC titles in both 1999 and 2003 and was named KCAC Coach of the Year in both seasons. His 2003 squad made Bethel’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament, while Chupp coached two KCAC Players of the Year, four NAIA All-Americans and nine NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes during his tenure at Bethel.
Chupp grew up in Goshen and is a 1987 graduate of Bethany Christian High School, where he was a First Team All-Elkhart County High School Basketball Selection.
In 1992, he graduated from Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), Harrisonburg, Va., with bachelor of science degrees in physical education and psychology. While at EMU, he was the second-leading scorer in the history of the men’s basketball program and was named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Conference team three straight years. In 1996, he was inducted into the EMU Hall of Honor, and he still holds the conference career record for three-pointers, with 294.
After graduation, Chupp went to Bethel as an assistant coach and interim head coach, from 1992 to 1994, before moving on to Bluffton (Ohio) University as an assistant for two years and then Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa., as an assistant for two years. He then returned to Bethel College in 1998. At Bethel, Chupp was also an instructor in the health management department.
In addition to his coaching duties, Chupp serves as an assistant professor of physical education at Goshen. He resides in Goshen with his wife, Melissa, and their three children: Madilyn, six, Tyson, three, and Cori, who was born in April of 2008.

Assistant Coach Neal Young
Neal Young beings his second season as an assistant coach at Goshen College in 2009-2010 as well as his second full-time season in the collegiate coaching ranks.
“I am excited to have Neal in our basketball program as one of our assistant coaches,” said Chupp. “Throughout the interview process, Neal stood out on a lot of different levels. He brings a tremendous passion for teaching the game of basketball that is contagious, and I have no doubt that he will make an immediate contribution, both on and off the court.”
Young has had one-year stints as a men’s basketball administrative assistant at Anderson University, head coach in the 17 and 16-under divisions of the Anderson Heat AAU program, and as an advance scout for Mid-Central Conference foe Indiana Wesleyan University.
After leading Delta High School to a 3A state title as an all-conference performer and team captain, Young took his playing skills to NCAA DIII Anderson University. At Anderson, Young excelled on and off the court, earning academic honors as well as the coaches attitude award. He also founded Anderson University’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Young spent the 2007-08 season behind the bench at Anderson Highland High School. At Anderson Highland, Young served as the assistant varsity and head freshman coach with responsibilities in scouting, player development, fundraising, and organization of summer tournaments. His experiences at Anderson Highland –along with local collegiate programs – gives him a wide range of recruiting contacts throughout Indiana.
Neal and his wife, Maggie, were married in the summer of 2008 and reside in Goshen.
