Goshen Comeback Comes One Shot Short Against Marian

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Christian Grider led all scorers with 15 points, but two go-ahead field goal tries and another game-tying effort in the final seconds missed the mark Saturday afternoon as the Goshen College men's basketball team fell 60-57 to Marian in Crossroads League action at Gunden Gymnasium.

Xavier Newson scored 13 points while Devin Heath-Granger and Kevin Phillips had 10 apiece to leave four players in double figures for the Maple Leafs (10-12, 3-7).

Marian (11-11, 2-8) took a 30-29 lead into the locker room at halftime after a first half in which the margin was three points or less for all but 68 seconds. The teams traded baskets for the next nine minutes before a 7-0 Knight run pushed their edge out to five points with 8:39 left: the lead reached a game-high 10 (55-45) with 5:51 to play.

But Goshen's defense stepped up down the stretch, holding Marian 0-for-6 from the floor with three turnovers from that point on. Phillips converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and Grider a new-fashioned one to slice the deficit in half in the span of a minute.

After a pair of foul shots on the other end, GC scored on its next three trips: Heath-Granger hit a jumper from the foul line to pull within 58-53 at the 2:24 mark before Phillips hit two free throws with 1:42 left and Heath-Granger closed his team within one in the final 54 seconds.

Phillips came through in the paint, stuffing Marian leading scorer Wesley Stowers with 28.9 seconds remaining. GC brought the ball to the forecourt and, after a pair of penetration attempts, called its final timeout with 9.9 seconds to play. Billy Geschke's drive to the basket missed to the left: a put-back from Phillips was successful but waved off due to basket interference with 3.4 on the clock.

On the ensuing inbound play, Stowers was fouled and made two free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to cap off his team-high 15 points. Grider's running 3-pointer from near halfcourt missed just to the left of the basket at the buzzer.

Each team's shooting percentage fell off after halftime, with Goshen going from 48 percent to 36.4 percent while Marian dropped from 47.4 percent to 36.7. Both sides tried 15 threes, with the Maple Leafs making six and the Knights four, but Marian made up that difference with a 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) mark at the foul line. Goshen was 11-for-15 (73.3 percent) at the stripe.

Grider led all players with three triples while Patrick Bell pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for Marian, which won the glass 30-28. Heath-Granger contributed five assists, one more than Stowers, while Curtis Green added four steals for the Knights and Phillips four blocks for GC.

GC will seek to right its path Tuesday evening in a visit to Indiana Wesleyan University. The Wildcat squad enters the game ranked 10th in the nation and one game behind Bethel for the conference lead. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Luckey Arena.
