Leafs come up one match short in rivalry series opener

MARION, Ind. — All six members of the Goshen College women's tennis team won a match on Tuesday, but the Maple Leafs came up one match short in a 4-3 loss to Bethel after starting the day with a 7-0 defeat against no. 11 Indiana Wesleyan at IWU's Sutter Tennis Center.

The Maple Leafs (0-4, 0-4 Crossroads League) didn't start out on the right foot in their second match, losing 6-3 at no. 1 doubles in the first match off the courts, but they made up for it in the other two doubles matches with identical 6-3 wins for a 2-1 edge and the doubles point. Ashley Arroyo and Elsie Koop Liechty combined for their first doubles win together at no. 3, as did Meaghan Godzisz and Victoria Oakes at no. 2 in the match that finished doubles.

Bethel (1-3, 1-3) replied quickly with a pair of double-bagel wins that bookended the singles lineup, getting wins from Grace Haley and Kyla Heckaman, before Hannah McCoy leveled the team match with a matching score at no. 4 singles for the Maple Leafs.

That left three matches on court, and the teams split the next two off with Hinshaw winning at no. 2 and Bethel's Lena Jojo following suit one spot lower. Each match was won by a combined set score of 12-2, leaving the team match 3-3.

Bethel's Emma Crouse got the deciding point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at no. 4. The win allowed the Pilots to take the first of 15 points in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup rivalry series, though the lead would be short-lived following the Maple Leafs' men's tennis win later in the afternoon.

In the opener, Indiana Wesleyan swept doubles by an 18-0 aggregate score and used the same six players to post six singles wins. All six singles matches were decided in straight sets.

The highlight for Goshen came at no. 2 singles where Sarah Hinshaw dropped each set by a single break of serve, pushing the second set as far as it would go without a tiebreak. The sophomore lost 6-3, 7-5 to IWU's Lena Golz.

GC has two days off before playing three times in 28 hours to start the weekend. The Maple Leafs host Judson in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. Friday, then play host to Grace and Mount Vernon Nazarene in a conference date on Saturday.
