INDIANAPOLIS — A straight-set win from Sarah Hinshaw and a match-tiebreak victory from Meaghan Godzisz combined with Naomi Lapp Klassen's first collegiate win to put the Goshen College women's tennis team on the precipice of a victory Tuesday, but the Maple Leafs dropped a 4-3 decision to Bethel University in a U.S. Highway 20 Cup match played at Marian University.
Bethel won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches and posted three singles wins to split that segment and deny Goshen a shot at next week's Crossroads League tournament.
Godzisz was a double winner for the Maple Leafs (0-11, 0-8), joining Szofia Kallai to post a 7-5 win at no. 2 doubles before coming back from a one-set deficit to top Layla Jojo 10-4 in a match tiebreak at no. 2 singles.
Hinshaw picked up a 6-1 win in the second set at no. 3, while Lapp Klassen was down a set but up 4-3 in the second when her opponent retired.
In the nightcap, Goshen fell 4-0 to a nationally-ranked Marian team in a match that finished at the Indianapolis Healthplex due to passing storms. With the teams on the hook to pay for indoor court time, the match was called as soon as one team had the requisite four points.
Indoors, Kallai made Goshen's best showing at no. 1 singles, taking Lizzie Kuebler to a tiebreak in a first set that lasted so long that three other matches were able to finish two sets before they finished their first. Marian made quick work of the other six positions, though, posting five 6-0 sets and three 6-1s.
The defeat locks Goshen into the ninth spot in the Crossroads League standings, which means GC will not qualify for next week's league tournament unless a team ahead of it withdraws. The final standings will not be set until after makeup matches are completed Wednesday and Saturday.
GC returns to action on each of the next two days, hosting Trine at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Judson at 4 p.m. Thursday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
