MARION, Ind., and GOSHEN, Ind. — Anna Osborne and Hannah McCoy each won sets for the Goshen College women's tennis team on Saturday as the Maple Leafs capped a three-match, two-day weekend. The Maple Leafs lost 4-0 to Holy Cross College at Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday and dropped both ends of a conference tri-match Saturday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex, losing to Spring Arbor and Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Friday's match featured only five complete individual matches: with each school in the midst of a dense portion of the fall schedule, play was halted in both the doubles and singles segments when a winner had been determined.
In Saturday's opener, Goshen's lead doubles duo of Sarah Hinshaw and McCoy pushed Lucy Burau and Abby Ducharme into a tiebreak before losing 6-4. All six singles matches ended in straight sets with McCoy's 6-4 loss in the second set at no. 3 being the closest.
While the final score in the final match shows 7-0, the Maple Leafs dropped two of the doubles matches by a single service break and went to third sets in two singles matches, with two other sets coming down to the final service game. Naomi Lapp Klassen came within three points of a first-set win at no. 6 singles and Hinshaw played a 7-5 set at no. 2.
Following the postponement of Monday's scheduled match with Tiffin, Goshen will return to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts Trine University at the Ingold Athletic Complex.
