Goshen fall tennis schedule released

Teams hope to excel after both squads made the league tournament in 2022

GOSHEN, Ind. - The fall 2023 tennis schedule has been announced as the Maple Leafs look to grow after a season that saw both teams make the Crossroads League tournament.

The men finished 7-7 with a 5-4 Crossroads League record. The seven wins were the most they had in a season since 2019-2020. A highlight from their year was a major upset win at home against #3 Indiana Wesleyan. The Leafs won 4-3 after losing the past eight contests against IWU, scoring one combined point in the previous four matchups. Goshen last beat the Wildcats on September 6, 2016. Mario Gomez, Insee Akarapan, and Filippo Gallo won in singles and GC took the doubles point as well. Goshen won 7-0 against both Mount Vernon Nazarene and Saint Francis on the road. Filippo Gallo and Matija Margetic represented the Leafs on the All-Crossroads League Team. It was the first time Goshen had two men's players earn All-Crossroads League honors in the same season since 2019-20.

The women ended the season with a 4-10 overall record and a 2-7 record in conference, The four wins matched their win total over the previous four seasons combined. Additionally, it was the first time since 2006 that they had recorded multiple wins in conference play. As an eight seed, the team made the Crossroads League tournament for the first time since the modern tournament began in 2011. Szofia Kallai and Sude Aytekin made the All-Crossroads League Team. It was the first time the Goshen women had an All-Crossroads League selection since Rachel Lanctot in the 2009-10 season. The last time the team had two winners was the 2007-08 season.

Now under the interim leadership of Doug Gossman, who had been an assistant coach for the teams since 2016, the Maple Leafs will hit the ground running in September before the league tournament quickly approaches at the start of October. They start the season on September 2 with a home opener against Huntington before road contests at Grace and Spring Arbor. Then they challenge two nonconference opponents in Purdue Northwest and Judson in Hammond, Indiana on September 9. Next are five Crossroads League matchups, with matches against Saint Francis, Marian, and Indiana Wesleyan at home.

The ITA Regional Tournament is before the league tournament this year, from September 27-30 at the campus of Indiana Wesleyan. The Crossroad League tournament will take place from October 3-7. Stay tuned to goleafs.net for coverage throughout the season.
