WINONA LAKE & GOSHEN, Ind. - The fall seasons for the Goshen men's and women's tennis teams ended on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the Crossroads League tournaments. The Goshen men hosted Bethel as the four-seed in the eight-team tournament and lost 2-5. The GC women were at Grace as the six-seed and lost 0-7.
With their regular season finishes, the teams combined to earn 12 points for Goshen College in the Crossroads League All-Sports Standings. The Maple Leafs sit at fifth out of ten teams and are only behind Grace, Marian, Bethel and Huntington.
Men - Bethel 5, Goshen 2
The Leafs narrowly missed taking the doubles point after a brief rain right before start time delayed the match.
Gustavo Guillen dos Santos and
Alvaro Rueda won in #3 doubles 6-3. However, the Pilots won at #1 6-3 and 7-5 at #2.
In singles, Goshen's points came from
Filippo Gallo's 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles and
Pedro Scattolon's 6-3, 6-3 win at #5 singles. Bethel's other points all came in straight sets.
Women - Grace 7, Goshen 0
Goshen lost the doubles point 3-0. The Leafs put up a big fight at #2 doubles, but the Lancers beat Goshen's team of
Ariadna Otin O'Callaghan and
Uliana Dotsenko 7-5.
Goshen had two singles matches go to tiebreakers. Dotsenko and Otin O'Callaghan both lost 6-10 after winning their first sets and losing the second sets.
This season, the Goshen tennis teams had numerous accomplishments, listed below:
- The women had their first win against Spring Arbor since 2006
- The men ended a three match losing streak to Bethel with their regular season win over the Pilots
- The men had their first 4-0 start in league play since 2015
- The women had their first 3-1 start in league play since 2004
- The men are 8-0 against Mount Vernon Nazarene since 2017 and have won 57 of the 60 points available in that span
- The men didn't allow MVNU to win more than one game in any of the 15 sets that were played in singles and doubles
- The women had been shutout in their previous eight matchups with Marian before this season, being outscored in that timeframe 58-0. The last time the Leafs won two points against the Knights, as they did this year, was in 2008
- The men had their largest margin of victory against IWU since at least 2006
- Timo Novak became the first Goshen tennis player to make it to the semifinals in the ITA Regional men's singles main draw
- Blanka Bodo and Uliana Dotsenko advanced to the semifinals in the women's doubles main draw, a program first
- Novak beat Grace's #1 singles player Pablo Gregoria at ITA Regionals
- Bodo and Dotsenko defeated the #2 seed from Bethel 9-8 in a breaker at ITA Regionals
- Novak became Goshen's first Crossroads League Men's Tennis Player of the Week since 2015
- Novak started the year 6-0 in singles, Bodo and Margetic started 5-0
