FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen bowling teams competed in their first two Crossroads League tournaments over the weekend in Fort Wayne. The women placed fifth of eight on Friday and sixth of eight on Saturday. The men finished sixth of seven on both days.
Women - 5th of 8, 6th of 8
On Friday, the women were led by All-Tournament team performances by
Bailey Friars and
Samantha Bean. Friars hit a season-high 205 pins in her second regular game, destroying her previous best of 189. She came into the day with an average score of 152.4 but averaged 177.7 pins over the three games. Her 533 total pins was only behind the 552 from Kit Sprunger of Grace.
Samantha Bean was only one pin back from Friars with a 532 score. Her first two games were both scores of 187. Goshen was the only Crossroads League school to place five bowlers in the top 16. Out of the 70 scorers,
Abigail Kenestrick came in tenth, the top overall junior varsity bowler,
Kami Kimes finished 12th and
Rebekah Muzyk came in 16th.
Guliana Castiglione rounded out the varsity squad in 45th.
On Saturday, Bean had another strong showing by coming in sixth out of 69. Her high-game score was a 203 in the second game.
Hayden Smith bowled three games of 177 or higher, finishing in 14th. After the weekend, Smith's season average bumped up from 154.2 pins per game to 158.2.
Guliana Castiglione had a strong finish to the weekend and came in 18th. Although her first four games from the weekend were all scores under 140, in her last two games she knocked down 198 and 193 pins.
Abigail Kenestrick placed 20th and
Rebekah Muzyk in 26th.
Kami Kimes finished 43rd and
Bailey Friars in 47th to complete the varsity team's scoring. Smith and Kenestrick were a part of the junior varsity team.
Goshen was in third place after the regular games on Friday but slid to fifth after the baker games - placing ahead of Grace, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Bethel. The Leafs were in fifth after Saturday's regular games and sixth once the baker games had finished. They finished with an even 4,500 pins - 68 back from MVNU.
Men - 6th of 7, 6th of 7
The men were just one pin away from tying Grace on Friday. The Maple Leafs finished with 4,460 total pins while the Lancers were at 4,461.
Parker Lovejoy was the team's top finisher, coming in 12th of 74 and averaging 199 pins per game with a high-game of 244 pins.
Brendan Riley came in 16th,
Hayden Grindle in 31st and
Nik Bressert right behind in 32nd as a part of the junior varsity team. Goshen's other two varsity scorers were
Zachary Gage and
Cameron Fedenis, coming in 54th and 55th respectively.
On Saturday, Goshen was in seventh of seven after the regular games but moved up to sixth after the 12 baker games. The Leafs beat Mount Vernon Nazarene in both tournaments. Riley was Goshen's top finisher this time around, coming in ninth of 72 and averaging a score of 220 over the three regular games. Goshen's second through fourth varsity scorers took the 39th through 41st spots.
Nik Bressert and
Parker Lovejoy each hit 541 pins and
Michael Ramirez had a 533 score.
Hayden Grindle finished 45th.
Cameron Fedenis was Goshen's top JV scorer and finished 25th. His score of 243 in the first regular game is his season-best, beating his previous mark of 234.
The Maple Leafs will not compete again until the weekend of January 18 and 19 when they are at the Midwest Collegiate Classic in Addison, Illinois.
