GOSHEN, Ind. - Both Goshen tennis teams swept Mount Vernon Nazarene 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Goshen. This is Goshen's first 4-0 start in the Crossroads League since 2015. The last time the women started 3-1 was 2004. It was 20 years ago to the day that they beat Saint Francis at home to go 3-1 to start that season.
The men are 8-0 against the Cougars since 2017 and have won 57 of the 60 points available in that span (in 2017 and 2018, they played out of nine points). The women have beaten MVNU two years in a row after losing the previous four matchups.
The women won 6-0 at #1 doubles and 6-1 at #2 doubles. MVNU didn't have enough players to field a team at #3 doubles or at #6 singles. Three of Goshen's singles wins were by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Uliana Dotsenko did so at #2 singles,
Sara Nino at #3 singles and
Naomi Lapp Klassen at #5 singles.
In men's doubles, Goshen won 18 of the 19 sets. In all of the 15 sets that were played in men's singles and doubles, Mount Vernon Nazarene never won more than one game in any of them. Like the women, three of Goshen's singles scores were 6-0, 6-0. Those came from
Timo Novak in #3 singles,
Mario Gomez in #5 singles and
Pedro Scattolon in #6 singles.
