GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen tennis teams started their 2024 campaign on a high note, as the men beat Spring Arbor 6-1 and the women won 5-2. This was the women's first win against Spring Arbor since 2006 and the third straight win for the men over Spring Arbor.
The men scored doubles wins at #1 and #3.
Filippo Gallo and
Gustavo Guillen dos Santos had a quick 6-1 win at #1 doubles and
Alvaro Rueda and
Bruno Ferrera won 6-3 at #3. Guillen dos Santos, Rueda and Ferrera are all freshmen who made their debuts as Maple Leafs.
Timo Novak is another first-year who made his debut in #3 singles. He picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win and joined four other Maple Leafs with singles wins. Gallo won in #1 singles,
Matija Margetic won at #2,
Mario Gomez at #5 and
Pedro Scattolon at #6. All five of Goshen's singles wins came in just two sets.
Sara Nino and
Maria Clara Fonte had a 6-3 win in #2 doubles but the Leafs lost in #3 doubles. The team of
Blanka Bodo and
Uliana Dotsenko had an emphatic win in #1 doubles to earn Goshen the team point. In singles, the Leafs captured wins from #1 down to #4. Bodo won 6-3, 6-4 and Dotsenko took her match in three sets. Nino won at #3 singles and Fonte gave up just three games to her opponent in her two-set win at #4 singles. Dotsenko, Fonte and Nino are all freshmen for the Leafs.
Goshen hosts Bethel on Saturday, September 7, at noon. Bethel's women's team is receiving votes in the coaches poll.
