GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen men's tennis team had lost three straight matches against Bethel after winning the previous 17. Now they're back in the win column after a 4-3 victory on Saturday. The women lost to Bethel's team that is receiving votes in the coaches poll 1-6.
Men - Win 4-3
Bethel won all three of the doubles matches by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4. They claimed wins in #1 and #4 singles, though each match took three sets to win.
Matija Margetic won for the Leafs in #2 singles 6-3, 6-2, and
Timo Novak did so in #3 singles 6-2, 6-1.
Mario Gomez overcame a first-set loss in #5 singles, winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The last Goshen point came at #6 singles, where
Pedro Scattolon was facing Martin Gaviria. Gaviria won the first set 6-2 and Scattolon took the next 6-4, but Gaviria was injured and forced to retire from the match, giving Goshen the win.
Women - Loss 1-6
The Goshen women lost the doubles point, although the team of
Maria Clara Fonte and
Sara Nino won at #2 doubles 6-4. Goshen's singles win came at #1, as
Blanka Bodo defeated Ariadne Kokoula 7-5, 6-1. Bodo is 2-0 at #1 singles this year and Nino and Clara Fonte are 2-0 at #2 doubles.
The Maple Leafs are at Saint Francis (Ind.) on Monday, September 9, at 2:00 pm. The matches had originally been scheduled for 4:00 pm.
