Maple Leafs start new year at Mastodon Invitational

Sofolohan, Garlinger and Walker earn second-place finishes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen track and field teams competed in their first meet of the new year at the Mastodon Invitational on Saturday. They will compete at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic next Friday.

Kaitlyn Johnson placed fifth and Caroline Lamb came in sixth out of 15 for the women's weight throw. Caoimhe Farrell placed fourth of 11 in the women's high jump with a height of five feet and and a quarter inch.

Sam Sofolahan and Danial Murphy both placed high enough in the men's 60 meters prelims to advance to the final. Sofolohan had a 6.92 time in the prelims and a 6.94 time in the final, coming second overall. Murphy ran a 7.06 to qualify for the final, where he then ran a 6.99 time to finish fourth. There were 21 total competitors in the event.

Caroline Jelimo and Stephany Claudio came in 12th and 13th respectively in the women's mile out of 37 runners. In the men's mile, Jordan Garlinger finished second of 41 with a time of 4:23.16. Anthony Roberts was seventh of 41 at 4:29.64. Kevin Liddell wasn't much farther behind in 12th place.

Max Estep had a fourth-place finish out of 14 in the men's 400 meters, crossing the line in 52.02 seconds. Then, Detroit Walker placed second of seven in the men's 60-meter hurdles with an 8.52 second time. Garlinger had another strong finish in the men's 800 meters, placing 13th of 35 just over the 2:00 mark. Ty Hazen came in fourth of 23 in the men's 200 meters at 23.33 seconds.

The GVSU Bill Clinger Classic will take place on Friday, January 24, at 1:00 pm at Grand Valley State University.
