UPLAND, Ind. - Freshman
Detroit Walker broke a school record in the 60-meter hurdles as Goshen competed in the George Glass Invitational on Saturday at Taylor University. Walker won the event made up of 22 competitors.
Walker had a time of 8.38 seconds, which was faster than the previous school record time of 8.45 seconds set by Tomas Fuentes in 2021. Walker had a time of 8.51 in the prelims, which was still faster than the second fastest competitor in the final - Micah Williams of Marian with a time of 8.54.
Jordan Garlinger won the men's 800 meters, beating the field of 41 other runners. He finished with a time of 1:58.62 and teammate
Anthony Roberts wasn't far back in third place with a time of 2:00.02.
Bruno Kipsang was third of 25 in the 600 meters and
Charlie Aldrich came in fourth.
Danial Murphy had a strong day, coming in third of 56 in the 200 meters and eighth of 60 in the 60 meters.
Max Estep was fifth of 30 in the 400 meters and the 4x400 team of
Bruno Kipsang,
Bryan Sixtos Armas,
Anthony Roberts and
Kevin Liddell placed third of 12. Goshen was represented well in the long jump, as
Evan O'Toole finished fourth of 26 and
Ty Hazen placed sixth.
Jaylah Leggett was the highest finisher for the Goshen women. Leggett came in second of 28 in the 60 meters in 7.99 seconds - eight-hundredths from tying her own school record set in December.
Britney Ortega came in third of 17 in the 600 meters at 1:44.65. Freshman
Ella Armstrong was one spot behind in fourth and was the highest-placing underclassman in the event.
Mercy Chebet came in ninth of 37 in the 800 meters and
Stephany Claudio was a spot behind in tenth. In the mile, Chebet came in eighth of 38 and Claudio was ninth.
The Maple Leafs compete at the IWU Midwest Classic on Saturday, February 1, at 10:00 am.
