MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Goshen College tennis teams competed at the Fall Invitational this past weekend in Tennessee. There were five players that won the finals of their singles section and three pairs that won their doubles finals. The other teams that competed were Cumberland University, Christian Brothers University, University of Tennessee Southern and Blue Mountain College.
Men
Timo Novak won the men's A singles, giving him a 10-1 singles record this season, with the only loss coming in the ITA quarterfinals. This weekend he won his quarterfinal match 6-2, 6-3, semifinals 6-2, 6-4 and the final 6-3, 4-6, [10-8].
Denis Stanculov went 3-0 as well at the men's E singles. He won 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals and 7-5, 3-6, [10-5] in the final. He has a 5-1 singles record this year.
The pair of
Paulo Lopez and
Bruno Ferrera won the men's A doubles bracket. They cruised to a 6-0 win in the quarterfinal round and then fought through 7-5 wins in both the semifinals and finals.
Filippo Gallo and
Joaquin Luque won their rounds in the men's B doubles. Over the course of the increasingly difficult rounds, they won 6-2, 6-3 and then 6-4. This season Ferrera is 4-1 in doubles, Gallo and Lopez are both 7-1 and Luque has an 8-1 record.
Women
Blanka Bodo is now 7-1 in singles this season, after winning the A bracket this weekend. She swept the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0, won in the semifinals 6-4, 6-3 and then 6-3, 6-4 in the finals.
Sara Nino is 6-1 in doubles after doing the same in the B bracket, winning those matches 6-4, 6-2, followed by 7-6, 6-3 and then a commanding 6-1, 6-1 finals win.
Maria Clara Fonte is also 6-1 in doubles, following her teammates by winning in C singles. She had a close 3-6, 6-0, [14-12] result in the quarterfinals and then a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win in the semis. She ended with a 6-4, 5-7, [10-7] win in the finals.
Bodo and Fonte boosted their doubles records to 9-1 after a strong showing in the women's A doubles bracket. The pair won 6-2, 6-0, and then won 6-4 in the finals. Between singles and doubles, Bodo has a combined record of 16-2 this year and Fonte is 15-2.
The home tennis match against Davenport for next weekend has been canceled. The Maple Leafs are at Grand Valley State on Saturday, October 25.
