Sofolahan breaks school record again as Leafs complete day one at Crossroads League Championships

Men tied for eighth, women in tenth after day one

UPLAND, Ind. - The Goshen men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed on day one of two of the Crossroads League Indoor Championships, held at the Taylor University Indoor Complex. The men are currently tied for eight and the women are in tenth place.

Sam Sofolahan beat the school record in the 60 meters for the third time this season. For the second time he beat the mark by a hundredth of a second, posting a result of 6.90 seconds this time around. He had the fastest time among those who didn't qualify for the final and the third-fastest time among freshmen in the race.

The men scored four points from Evan O'Toole's fifth-place finish in the long jump. O'Toole seemed to improve as the day went on, with his best jumps coming on his final two attempts. Both were 6.47 meters (21 feet, 2.75 inches). Another four points came from the distance medley relay team that finished fifth in the event. Jordan Garlinger, Kevin Liddell, Bruno Kipsang and Anthony Roberts combined to run the race in 10:28.40.

Lastly, the Leafs earned two points in the 4x800-meter relay. The group of Charlie Aldrich, Max Estep, Fred Kaelo and Josiah Miller ran a time of 8:33.68, placing seventh. The 4x800 team of Jordan Garlinger, Bruno Kipsang, Anthony Roberts and Kevin Liddell have already qualified for nationals in the event with a time of 7:47.76 - the 11th fastest in the NAIA.

The women's 4x800 team earned three points, placing sixth with a time of 10:08.06. Ella Armstrong, Britney Ortega, Mercy Chebet and Caroline Jelimo made up the team. Chebet went on to run the 5,000 meters and placed fifth of 20 with a time of 18:12.30, adding four points to the team's total.

Kaitlyn Johnson's longest toss in the weight throw was 15.45 meters (50 feet, eight inches) despite fouling on two of her six attempts. That put her in sixth place overall out of 18. Caroline Lamb had a mark of 13.49 meters (44 feet, three inches) on her third attempt, which landed her in eighth place. Johnson and Lamb combined to earn four points for the Maple Leafs.

Going into day two, the women are within five points of Mount Vernon Nazarene, Saint Francis, Grace and Spring Arbor. The men are tied with Bethel and Saint Francis, a point away from Grace and Mount Vernon Nazarene and two points off of Taylor. Marian lead both on the women's and men's sides.
