Leggett ties school record, Leafs wrap up at Crossroads League Championships

Men tie for eighth, women finish tenth

UPLAND, Ind. - The Goshen indoor track and field teams completed the second and final day of the Crossroads League Indoor Championships on Saturday, hosted by Taylor University. The men finished tied for eighth and the women came in tenth. Jaylah Leggett tied her school record in the 60 meters.

The men earned four points from Jordan Garlinger's fifth-place finish out of 26 runners in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:57.23, just a hundredth of a second before the sixth-place finisher. Anthony Roberts came in sixth of 22 in the 1000 meters at 2:31.68, narrowly missing the NAIA B standard. The men's 4x400-meter relay team placed eighth, picking up one point. Sam Sofolahan gave the Leafs a point for his eighth place finish in the 60-meter finals.

The Goshen men earned six points in the jumping events. Evan O'Toole finished sixth in the triple jump, with his first jump of 12.23 meters (40 feet, 1.5 inches) being his best mark. The Maple Leafs had two scorers in the high jump. Ty Hazen came in seventh at 1.83 meters (six feet), clearing it on his third and final attempt at that height. O'Toole came eighth, clearing 1.78 meters (five feet, ten inches) on his first go, but was unable to get over the bar at 1.83 meters.

Jaylah Leggett was the women's top scorer on day two. She tied her school record in the 60-meter finals with 7.91 seconds, coming in seventh. She was sixth of 22 in the 200 meters, earning three points for the Leafs in that event.

The Maple Leafs picked up another five points in the 3000 meters with four from Mercy Chebet's fifth-place finish and one from Stephany Claudio coming in eighth. Chebet had a time of 10:42.59 and Claudio not far off at 10:43.71. There were 24 competitors in the race.

Lastly, Goshen got half a point from Caoimhe Farrell in the women's high jump. Farrell tied for eighth by hitting 1.50 meters (four feet, 11 inches) on her first attempt but missing all three efforts at 1.55 meters (five feet, one inch). Ariel Manns of Bethel had the same result, ending in them splitting the one point and tying for eighth.

The Goshen men tied with Huntington and placed ahead of Saint Francis. Marian won on the women's side and the men's side - earning 315 points with the men and 248 with the women. Both were Crossroads League Indoor Championship records, beating their own marks. New conference meet records were set in the men's 60 meters, women's mile, men's 3000 meters, women's 3000 meters, women's 5000 meters and the women's pentathlon.

Goshen's men's 4x800-meter relay team will compete at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Gainesville, Florida, on Thursday, February 27, at 3:15 pm. Should they make it to the final, they will compete again the next day at 6:25 pm.
