Chebet, Shaw, and men's 4x800 team lead GC after day one at league champhionship

Chebet earned All-Conference, men's 4x8 qualifies for nationals

MARION, Ind. - The Goshen track and field teams competed on day one of the outdoor Crossroads League Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on Thursday. Mercy Chebet earned all the points for the women's team so far while the men got their points from the national qualifying 4x800-meter relay team and freshman thrower Liam Shaw.

Women
Chebet earned a runner-up and all-conference finish in the 10,000 meters. Her time of 37:39.03 was only behind Sam Patterson of Taylor. She earned eight points for the Maple Leafs with her result.

Jaylah Leggett had a strong showing in the prelims of the 100 and 200 meters. In the 100, she had the second-fastest qualifying time at 12.13 seconds, which is .09 seconds behind the school record. She won her heat and only trailed Dylainey Floyd of Indiana Wesleyan. The top seven were all freshmen or sophomores. Leggett's prelim time of 12.13 seconds is tied for the tenth-fastest in the history of the league's outdoor championship. In the 200 meters she came in seventh at 25.33 seconds, earning one of the at-large spots for the final.

Kaitlyn Johnson narrowly missed out on scoring for the Leafs with a ninth-place finish in the discus.

Men
The 4x800-meter relay team came in fifth and picked up four points. Jordan Garlinger, Anthony Roberts, Charlie Aldrich and Kevin Liddell finished at a time of 7:42.74. Marian won the race with a league championship record of 7:24.50. Goshen qualified for the NAIA national championships in the event by beating the NAIA B standard time of 7:44.00.

Liam Shaw earned points for GC in the shot put and the discus. He was eighth in the shot put with his best attempt coming on his fifth of six throws. His mark on that effort was 13.21 meters (43 feet, four inches). All four of his attempts that weren't fouls were al at least 41 feet. He was eighth in the discus as well. He had three fouls in a row from his second through his fourth attempts. However, his first attempt was the best of the six tries at 41.93 meters (137 feet, seven inches). All three of those successful attempts were at least 134 feet, ten inches.

Detroit Walker automatically qualified for the final in the 110-meter hurdles by placing in the top two of his heat in the prelims. He had a time of 15.22 seconds, which was the fourth-fastest of the 17 participants. In the high jump, Evan O'Toole just missed a chance at scoring by coming in ninth at 1.76 meters (five feet, 9.25 inches). Damian Godman was tied for tenth.

On the second and final day of action, the field events will begin at 11:00 am and the running events at 11:30 am. The final awards will be handed out at 4:45 pm.
