Maple Leafs make final in men's singles, women's doubles at ITA Regional Tournament

Goshen players were eliminated numerous times in the brackets by their own teammates

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Members of the Goshen tennis teams had great performances at the ITA Regional Tournament held the last three days at Holy Cross College. So much so, that many times Goshen College players were eliminated in the brackets from their own teammates.

Men's Singles
Iago Cicui made it all the way to the final of the main men's open singles bracket before losing to Ching Wah Wai 1-6, 6-7 (4-7). Cicui won in the round of 64 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32 6-2, 6-1, in the round of 16 6-2, 3-6 [10-6], in the quarterfinals 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, [10-5] and in the semifinals 6-3, 6-3. Cicui has a 7-2 record in singles this season. Timo Novak made it to the quarterfinals, and Paulo Lopez and Noah Schrock each won three matches in the consolation bracket. Six of Goshen's seven players that competed in the round of 64 in the main bracket won their match.

Men's Doubles
The pair of Filippo Gallo and Joaquin Luque made it to the quarterfinals round. After an 8-4 win in the round of 32 followed by an 8-2 win in the round of 16, they fell 1-8 in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, Sebastian Junghanns and Luca Ebenriter of Missouri Baptist University. Timo Novak and Denis Stanculov as well as Iago Cicui and Garrett Stoltzfus won in the round of 32. Seven players on the men's team have a doubles record of at least 3-1 or better this season - Cicui, Gallo, Lopez, Luque, Novak, Stanculov and Stoltzfus. Stoltzfus and Cicui are both 5-1.

Women's Doubles
The strongest showing from the women's team came from Blanka Bodo and Maria Clara Fonte, advancing all the way to the final in the main women's doubles bracket. The two started with an 8-4 win in the round of 32, followed by an 8-5 victory in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals they came out on top 8-6 and then beat their own Goshen teammates, Vishmi Serasinghe and Marin Kawano, by an 8-1 score in the semifinals. They lost in the championship 4-6, 6-7 (2-7) to Szilvia Ferenczy and Paola Lameda Morin from Bethel. Serasinghe and Kawano won two matches before losing to their Goshen teammates.

Women's Singles
Blanka Bodo and Uliana Dotsenko both won in the round of 32 and round of 16 but succumbed in the quarterfinals. Sara Nino and Maria Clara Fonte had wins in the round of 64 and round of 32. Those four have records of 3-1 in singles this season.

The Maple Leafs head to Tennessee to take on Tennessee Southern on Thursday, October 2 and then compete in the Fall Invitational on October 3 and 4.
