MARION, Ind. - Duncan Kogei became the Crossroads League champion in the men's indoor 5,000 meters on Friday as the Maple Leafs competed on day one of the indoor Crossroads League Championships in Troyer Fieldhouse. Through the first day of competition, the Goshen men are in seventh and the women in tenth.
Men - 19 points, 7th of 10
Kogei currently holds the 11th-fastest time in the NAIA in the 5,000 meters and had already qualified for nationals. Today he ran the race in a time of 14:54.95, still more than 16 seconds away from his best time this season, but he finished first among the other 22 competitors in the race. Hunter Wasnich of Indiana Wesleyan came in second at 14:57.75. The top three finish means Kogei is an All-Crossroads Leauge team member for men's indoor track and field.
The men's distance medley relay team of
Max Estep,
Bruno Kipsang,
Mathew Keitany and
Drew Hogan came in third of seven to score six points for the Leafs in addition to Kogei's ten. The team had a time of 10:11.72 as they all became All-Crossroads League team members as well. The squad already qualified for nationals a week ago with a 10:08.88 time.
Evan O'Toole scored two points with a seventh-place finish out of 16 in the long jump. He didn't foul on any of his six attempts, and his fifth one was his best at 6.37 meters (20 feet, 10.75 inches). All six of his jumps were at least 6.05 meters. He beat his personal best by a quarter of an inch. The 4x800 team earned one point for an eighth place finish out of ten. The team of

Leighton Dodt,
David Sefu and
Peter Moser posted a time of 8:10.40.
Samuel Sofolahan and
Danial Murphy ran the prelims in the 60 meters, with Sofolahan posting a time of 6.84 seconds and Murphy in 6.91. The finals will be held on Saturday. Sofolahan had the fifth-best time and Murphy the eighth-best.
Women - 6 points - 10th of 10
The women's distance medley relay team earned three points for coming in sixth with a time of 13:40.55. The Leafs were made up of
Britney Ortega,
Kassandra Ortega,
Ella Armstrong and
Kamille Liddell. The 4x800 team came in seventh to earn two points with a time of 10:46.22.
Kamille Liddell and
Kassandra Ortega were also a part of that relay team, as well as
Citlaly Sanchez and
Presley Allen.
Caroline Lamb earned a point in the weight throw for a top toss of 13.28 meters (43 feet, seven inches). It came on her first attempt of the day. She finished eighth out of 21.
Jaylah Leggett topped her school record time of 7.82 seconds in the 60 meters when she ran a time of 7.80 in the prelims. She was in second, only behind Huntington's Addyson Dowler. The final is on Saturday. Leggett holds the eight fastest women's indoor 60 meter times in school history.
The field events start at 1:00 pm on Saturday and the running events begin at 1:20 pm.
