Sofolahan qualifies for nationals and Leggett wins women's 60 meters at IWU Midwest Classic

Leggett won the women’s 60 meters while Sofolahan hit the NAIA B standard and added two top-three finishes

MARION, Ind. - Samuel Sofolahan's NAIA National Championship qualifying time in the 60 meters highlighted Goshen's performance at the IWU Midwest Classic on Saturday. He joins Duncan Kogei and Drew Hogan as the Maple Leafs who have qualified for the championships in Gainesville, Florida.

Sofolahan beat the school record of 6.81 seconds that was held by Breezy Murphy and did just enough to hit the NAIA B standard by running a time of 6.80 seconds in the 60-meter prelims. He had the fastest time among 59 competitors in the prelims before finishing third in the finals with a time of 6.86 seconds. He also placed second out of 44 in the 200 meters with a time of 22.80 seconds.

Max Estep came in fifth of 32 in the 400 meters with a time of 51.84 seconds. Duncan Kogei placed tenth of 25 in the 800 meters (2:02.80) and ninth of 40 in the mile (4:26.69). Mathew Keitany was one spot behind him in the mile and just 0.15 seconds back. In the 1000 meters, Bruno Kipsang finished ninth of 39 (2:35.52) and Leighton Dodt was 13th (2:38.62).

In the field events, freshman Jayden Turner had a strong day, placing seventh of 12 in the high jump (six feet, 2.25 inches) and 13th of 27 in the long jump (19 feet, eight inches). In the throws, Liam Shaw placed 12th of 43 in the shot put (45 feet, 2.25 inches) and 26th of 36 in the weight throw (37 feet, six inches).

The women's team was led by Jaylah Leggett, who broke her own school record in the 60 meters by one one-hundredth of a second, running 7.82 seconds in the finals after a 7.84 prelim. She had the fastest time in both the prelims and the final - finishing first of 42 competitors. She added a second place finish out of 42 in the 200 meters with a time of 26.17.

In the 400 meters, Kamille Liddell placed 18th of 31 in 1:05.74, while Ella Armstrong had a 12th-place finish out of 21 runners in the 800 (2:38.24). Kassy Ortega placed 8th out of 20 in the mile in 5:31.45 and Presley Allen was tenth at 5:44.15.

In the field events, Caoimhe Farrell placed seventh of 11 in the high jump (four feet, 11.5 inches) and added a 9.71 time in the 60-meter hurdles prelims to place 13th of 27. In the throws, Leyna Borgman led the shot put group with a mark of 32 feet, 10.5 inches to come in 20th of 40, while Caroline Lamb placed 21st of 38 in the weight throw (39 feet, 9.75 inches).

Goshen is at the GVSU Big Meet - Friday on February 13 and the separate GVSU Big Meet - Saturday on February 14 before going to the Crossroads League Championships the following weekend.
