INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Goshen men's tennis picked up one of its most impressive results of the season Friday afternoon, edging #15 Marian 4-3 behind clutch three-set singles wins and strong doubles play. The women picked up one singles and one doubles victory but came up short against #10 Marian, falling 6-1.
Men - Goshen 4, Marian 3
This was Goshen's first win against Marian since 2008, after losing 11 straight.
The Maple Leafs, receiving votes in the national rankings, improved to 6-6 by taking two of three doubles courts and splitting the six singles matches.
Garrett Stoltzfus and
Filippo Gallo were central to the outcome, each going 2–0 on the day with a doubles win and a three-set singles victory that gave Goshen the margin it needed over the Knights, who dropped to 8–6.
Goshen set the tone in doubles, securing the critical team point with authoritative performances at the #2 and #3 spots. Stoltzfus and
Iago Ciucio swept #2 doubles 6–0, while the tandem of
Paulo Santiago and Gallo earned a 6–3 win on court three. Marian answered at the top line, where James Ashworth and Mateo Guerin topped
Timo Novak and
Denis Stanculov 6–3 at #1 doubles, but the Maple Leafs carried a 1–0 advantage into singles.
In singles, Novak won at #2, controlling his match 6–1, 6–4. Marian kept the pressure on at the lower end of the lineup, with Marcos Ramos Cabrera earning a 6–4, 6–2 result over Mahmut Emre Gurmeric at #4 singles and Juan Garcia-Tunon adding a 6–2, 6–4 decision at #6.
Garrett Stoltzfus delivered one of the pivotal points at #3 singles. After splitting the first two sets, he pulled away late in the third to claim a 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 win and push Goshen closer to the upset.
Filippo Gallo then provided the decisive blow at #5 singles, outlasting his opponent 6–1, 1–6, 6–4 in another three-set battle that sealed the Maple Leafs' fourth team point and the overall 4–3 victory.
Stoltzfus finished the day with wins at #3 singles and #2 doubles, while Gallo matched that 2–0 mark through his triumphs at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. Ashworth turned in a strong performance for Marian with victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles, but the Knights' efforts at the top of the lineup were not enough to overcome Goshen's depth and efficiency through the middle courts.
Women - Goshen 1, Marian 6
The Goshen women's lone singles point came from #4 player
Vishmi Serasinghe, who delivered a straight-sets win over Jimena Rivera Flores. Serasinghe controlled key service games on the way to a 6-3, 6-4 victory, giving Goshen its only result in the singles lineup against a Marian squad that improved to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in league action.
In doubles, Goshen earned a solid result at the #2 spot, where the pairing of
Maria Clara Fonte and
Blanka Bodo posted a 6-3 win. Goshen moves to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in Crossroads League competition with the loss, while Marian opens conference play at 1-0.Â
