GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Goshen men's distance medley relay team competed in the prelims on the first day of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, and the team was able to qualify for the final on Saturday at 5:00 pm. The team of
Mathew Keitany,
Max Estep,
Jacob Friesen,
Drew Hogan and completed the race in 9:56.98.
The time was a school record by 5.48 seconds, beating the time of 10:02.46 set by
Jordan Garlinger,
Drew Hogan,
Mathew Keitany and
Kevin Liddell in 2024. Keitany ran the first 1200 meters, followed by 400 meters from Estep, 800 meters by Friesen and 1600 from Hogan. Goshen competed in the first of two heats, coming in fifth of 11. The top three teams automatically qualified, so the Maple Leafs had to wait for the second heat to end to find out if they would have one of the top four remaining spots. The top time from heat two was 10:03.50 from Marian, so all four of the next fastest times outside of the automatic qualifiers came from heat one, and Goshen got to move on to the final.
Oklahoma City and Indiana Wesleyan both advanced by protest from heat two, so the final will contain 12 teams instead of ten. Five of the 12 teams will be Crossroads League schools - Taylor, Goshen, Marian, Spring Arbor and Indiana Wesleyan.
On Friday,
Drew Hogan runs the mile prelim at 12:05 pm (4:10.62 season best, the 12th best in the NAIA) and
Samuel Sofolahan lines up for the 60-meter dash prelims at 3:00 pm after qualifying in 6.77 seconds.
