Ortega wins 1,500 meters, Leafs distance runners show depth at Bill Bippes Cougar Classic

Ortega was the only competitor to run under five minutes in the women's 1,500 meters

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Goshen track and field teams competed at the Bill Bippes Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday on the campus of Spring Arbor University. Kassandra Ortega won the women's 1,500 meters and the Leafs showed depth in the mid-distance races.

Women
Ortega was the only competitor to run under five minutes in the women's 1,500 meters. Her time of 4:59.61 was first among the 28 in the field. Ella Armstrong came in sixth and Presley Allen was in seventh. Armstrong also came in sixth in the 800 meters out of 34. Allen came in 11th.

Jaylah Leggett had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100 meters and 200 meters. She had a time of 12.45 in the 100 and 25.76 in the 200. There were 20 sprinters in the 100 meters and 31 in the 200. Caoimhe Farrell placed sixth of 16 in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 16.35. She was eighth in the high jump at 1.48 meters (four feet, 10.25 inches). Caroline Lamb had three throws over 39 meters in the hammer throw. Her best at 39.43 meters (129 feet, four inches) placed her fifth out of 23. Bailee Brown also came in fifth of 23 in her field event, the javelin. Her first throw was her best at 29.24 meters (95 feet, 11 inches).

Men
Drew Hogan placed second of 40 in the men's 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.93. The NAIA B standard is 3:51.00. In the same race, Mathew Keitany came in fourth, Bruno Kipsang in sixth, Jesse Bontrager in eighth, Jacob Friesen in 11th, Leighton Dodt in 14th, Isaiah Beiter in 17th and Levi Friesen in 20th.

Hogan also ran the 800 and placed third of 46 with a 1:55.22 time. Goshen had over half of the top 11 - adding in Leighton Dodt in sixth, Jacob Friesen in seventh, Bruno Kipsang in eighth, Max Estep in ninth and Mathew Keitany in 11th. Duncan Kogei added another strong performance for the distance runners, finishing second in the 43-person 5,000 meter field. He had a time of 14:43.32.

Danial Murphy was sixth of 39 in the 100 meters with a time of 10.93 seconds. He was ninth of 38 in the 200 meters at 22.51. Evan O'Toole was fifth of 20 in the long jump. He cleared 6.16 meters (20 feet, 2.5 inches). Liam Shaw came in third of 29 in the shot put. His best throw came on his fourth of six attempts at 13.20 meters (43 feet, 3.75 inches). In discus, he was second of 36 at 45.48 meters (149 feet, two inches) - just over two feet from the winner.

Goshen is at the Indiana Little State Championships on April 17 and 18 at Indiana Wesleyan University.
