Women's tennis makes history with 6-1 win, men fall to Grace in ranked matchup

The women have more overall and conference wins than any season in team history

GOSHEN, Ind. - When Goshen and Grace squared off at the Stan King Tennis Complex on Tuesday, the women's matchup consisted of two teams receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll and the men's featured two top 25 teams. The Goshen women won 6-1, and the Grace men won 6-1.

Women - Goshen 6, Grace 1
The #2 doubles team of Marin Kawano and Uliana Dotsenko and the #3 doubles team of Sara Nino and Vishmi Serasinghe both won by dominant 6-1 scores to secure the doubles point for the Leafs. Blanka Bodo and Maria Clara Fonte lost a tight 7-6(4) decision at #1. Dotsenko and Kawano have won seven consecutive doubles matches. Nino and Serasinghe have won five straight.

In singles, Goshen earned points from #2 through #6. Blanka Bodo, Maria Clara Fonte and Vishmi Serasinghe only lost three games each in their straight set wins. Bodo won 6-0, 6-3, Fonte won 6-3, 6-0 and Serasinghe won 6-1, 6-2. Marin Kawano won 6-4, 6-1 at #5 singles and Sara Nino was victorious with a 6-2, 6-3 score at #6 singles. Dotsenko pushed her match to a super tiebreak before falling 10-5. Serasinghe remains undefeated in singles in league play and has won her last nine singles matches. Nino has won seven straight and Fonte is at six in a row.

This was just the second win for Goshen against Grace since 2006. Their most recent win came in 2022. The Maple Leafs have now had their winningest overall season and most conference wins in a season in program history, dating back to their start in 1972.

Men - Grace 6, Goshen 1
#23 Goshen and #19 Grace both held a 6-1 Crossroads League record heading into their Tuesday afternoon matchup. The Lancers won the doubles point 2-1 with Goshen's win coming at #2 doubles. Iago Ciucio and Garrett Stoltzfus won 6-4. This was the first doubles loss in conference for both Gallo and Santiago.

Goshen's lone point in singles came from Garrett Stoltzfus, who had a resounding 6-0, 6-1 victory in #3 singles. Stoltzfus is 17-7 in singles this season, and 7-1 in conference.

The Goshen men are now 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the Crossroads League. The women are 12-6 overall and 7-1 in the Crossroads League and have clinched a spot as a host for the Crossroads League Quarterfinals on Monday, April 20. The Leafs are at Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, April 18, at 11:00 am.
