Box Score MARION, Ind. - Women's tennis will be playing for the Crossroads League Championship after a semifinals win against #22 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs defeated the Wildcats 4-2 - their second win over IWU in the last four days.
Uliana Dotsenko and
Marin Kawano helped Goshen to a strong start with a 6-0 win at #2 doubles. However, the Wildcats had an equally dominant 6-0 win at #1 doubles. It came down to a nailbiter at #3 doubles.
Vishmi Serasinghe and
Sara Nino won 7-6 (7-5) in the tiebreaker to ensure the doubles point went to the Maple Leafs. Dotsenko and Kawano have now won nine straight doubles matches while Serasinghe and Nino have won seven straight.
Blanka Bodo gave Goshen a 2-0 lead with an emphatic 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles, recovering from a doubles loss. The Wildcats won at #1 singles to make it 2-1, but Serasinghe's 7-5, 6-2 win at #4 singles gave Goshen a two-point cushion yet again. Bodo has won four straight singles matches and has 18 wins on the year. Serasinghe's singles win streak extended to 12 matches in a row.
IWU won at #3 singles next and it was 3-2. However,
Marin Kawano came through for the second straight round in the tournament with the deciding point that clinched the match for Goshen. She won 6-4, 6-1 at #5 singles to give the Leafs a 4-2 victory - their second in four days over the Wildcats.
Goshen has now won two straight matches against Indiana Wesleyan after losing the previous 37. The Leafs have beaten the Wildcats twice in Marion in the last four days. Before that, they hadn't won there since 1979. Goshen came into today's match receiving votes in the NAIA coaches poll and IWU was ranked #22.
The Maple Leafs will face #12 Marian in the Crossroads League Championship on Friday, April 24, at 10:30 am at Indiana Wesleyan. The winner will earn the Crossroads League's automatic bid to the NAIA tournament. Marian defeated Huntington in the semifinal 4-1. The Knights have won eight straight matches and the Leafs have won ten straight, with Marian being their most recent loss on March 20.
