Kogei hits NAIA B standard in 10,000 meters, Shaw earns spot on podium after first day of Crossroads League Championships

Brown and Leggett make strides on the women's side heading into day two

MARION, Ind. - Duncan Kogei hit an NAIA B standard as he won the men's 10,000 meters on the first day of the Crossroads League Championships on Thursday at Indiana Wesleyan University. Liam Shaw earned All-Crossroads League in the men's discus and Jaylah Leggett and Samuel Sofolahan will advance to the final in the 100 and 200 meters.

Men
The men currently sit in sixth out of ten schools with 16 total points. Duncan Kogei earned ten of those points after placing first out of 17 in the 10,000 meters. His time of 30:50.74 beat the NAIA B standard of 30:53.00. Heading into the day, there were 16 NAIA runners who had hit the NAIA B standard with ony one from the Crossroads League. Goshen's remaining six points came from Liam Shaw in the discus. Shaw had no fouls across his six attempts, and his best throw came on his first effort, going 44.48 meters (145 feet, 11 inches). Shaw was only behind a pair of Indiana Wesleyan sophomores, Josh Holder and Carter Higgins. There were 24 total competitors.

In the men's 100 meters, Samuel Sofolahan qualified for the final on Friday with a time of 10.79 seconds. While he didn't earn an automatic qualification by winning one of the five heats, he came in second in his heat and earned the third of the remaining four qualifying spots. Danial Murphy just missed a spot in the final, finishing tenth of 36. He had a time of 10.88 seconds whereas the final runner who made the cut had a time of 10.86. Sofolahan also qualified in the 200 meters. He won his heat in that event, earning an automatic spot and coming in fifth of 32.

Goshen's men's 4x800-meter relay team was one spot away from earning a point in the event. In the men's shot put, Liam Shaw came in 11th of 22. He was two spots away from making the final cut.

Women
Jaylah Leggett won her heat and finished second of 27 in the women's 100-meter prelims. Her time of 12.28 seconds was only behind Kyla Bradberry of Marian, who finished in 12.13 seconds in a different heat. Leggett went on to finish second in her heat and fifth overall in the 200 meters. She crossed the line in 25.43 seconds. There were 33 competitors in the event.

Bailee Brown currently sits in seventh place in the women's heptathlon through four events. She placed ninth in the high jump (1.40 meters), seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (17.76 seconds), seventh in the shot put (8.40 meters) and seventh in the 200 meters (29.12 seconds).

In the discus, T Rodriguez came in 15th of 26 and Caroline Lamb wasn't far behind in 18th. They were 16th and 17th, respectively, in the shot put.

The action continues on Friday, starting with Bailee Brown competing in the long jump for the heptathlon at 9:10 am. Field events start at 11:00 am and running events at 11:30 am.
