MARION, Ind. - The Goshen track and field teams wrapped up day two of two in the Crossroads League Championships at Indiana Wesleyan on Friday. The men came in eighth and the women finished tenth.
Men - 8th of 10
Mathew Keitany was less than a second away from the NAIA B standard in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, but his performance was still strong enough to be the conference runner up and place second out of 15. His time of 9:23.93 was just behind the standard of 9:23.00.
After winning the 10,000 meters on Thursday and qualifying for nationals in the event,
Duncan Kogei went on to place fourth in the 5,000 meters on Friday and earn another five points for the Maple Leafs. He got under the 15-minute mark with a final time of 14:58.92, staying consistently in the third to fifth spot from the second lap on.
Jesse Bontrager won his heat and had a personal best in the event, placing 12th of 31.
In the 1,500 meters,
Jacob Friesen finished sixth of 37 to pick up another three points. He had a time of 3:55.64 and
Drew Hogan came in ninth at 3:59.77. In the 100 meters final,
Samuel Sofolahan finished seventh in a time of 10.82 seconds. He added two more points to Goshen's total. The final scoring for the Leafs came in the final event of the day, the men's 4x400-meter relay.
Leighton Dodt,
Max Estep,
Bruno Kipsang and
Jacob Wetzel  ran a time of 3:26.67 to finish eighth and earn a point.
With 35 points, Goshen placed ahead of Huntington and Saint Francis. Grace was one spot ahead at 38 points. Marian won the title, with 229.50 points.
Women - 10th of 10
Jaylah Leggett was the key force behind Goshen's scoring. She was the runner-up in the women's 100 meters final, finishing the race in 12.15 seconds. She had a time of 12.28 in the prelims. Leggett also competed in the 200 meters final later in the day. In that event she came in sixth, adding three more points to Goshen's total. She had a time of 25.74 seconds.
Bailee Brown competed for GC in the heptathlon and came in seventh of ten. Her best result came in the 800 meters, where she was second among the field with a time of 2:41.23. She was fourth in the javelin and fifth in the long jump. She competed in the javelin outside of the heptathlon as well and came in eighth out of 17. The third of her six attempts was the best - a throw of 28.93 meters (94 feet, 11 inches).
Goshen ended with 14 points and was 14 points away from Bethel. Marian won the championship with a total of 317.50 points.
The Maple Leafs compete at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite on May 8 and 9 in Joliet, Illinois.
