ASHEVILLE, N.C. - It was a tremendous second day of results for Goshen at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Mathew Keitany advanced to the final in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Duncan Kogei was an All-American in the 10,000 meters with a school record time.

Keitany was in the second of three heats in the steeplechase and would need to place in the top three of his heat or have one of the next five best remaining times to make it to the final. He was in fifth or sixth place among his heat early on, but the pack was still quite bunched up. There was just one second separating the first through tenth runners after the first 600 meters.

Two packs began to form, and Keitany was leading the second group midway through the race. He was competing for one of the at-large spots it appeared, but with just a lap to go he was gaining on the fourth-place runner. He made an even larger push with 100 meters to go - passing the second and third place runners to finish second. Keitany beat Brock Lauer of Montreat by one one-hundredth of a second and was ahead of Payton Brack from John Brown (Ark.) by 0.12 seconds. Heading into Friday's final at 2:35 pm, Keitany has the fifth-best time among the 14 finalists.

There was another lightning delay in the afternoon, the second day in a row, so Duncan Kogei had to wait until well into the nine o'clock hour for his 10,000-meter final to get underway. The first and second runners separated themselves, but Kogei was in third and leading a large pack of competitors in the early stages of the race. He was always in the top eight - the mark to be an All-American - throughout the entire race. By the halfway point, the top two runners had created an 18 second gap from the rest, and Kogei was comfortably in the seventh position. The third through eighth runners were not far from each other. Kogei stayed in sixth place for the last mile and finished with a personal best time of 30:35.61 and an incredible 1:07.41 time in his final lap.

With his time, Kogei beat the school record of 30:38.39 held by Ryan Smith from 2017. He ran a time of 30:50.74 to hit the NAIA B standard and qualify for nationals during his win in the event at the Crossroads League Championships. Luca Madeo of Cumberlands won the race in 29:50.28.

All that is left for the Leafs for the 2025-26 athletic year is Mathew Keitany's race in the steeplechase final on Friday at 2:45 pm.
