JOLIET, Ill. - Goshen track and field earned national qualifiers in two more events on Friday night at the St. Francis Fighting Chance Invite. The 4x800-meter relay team hit an NAIA B standard, and
Mathew Keitany did so later in the evening in the steeplechase.
Bruno Kipsang beat a school record in the 800 meters.
The evening started for the Maple Leafs with the 4x800-meter relay team finishing in a time of 7:38.71, hitting the NAIA B standard time of 7:42.00. The team was made up of
Bruno Kipsang,
Jacob Friesen,
Max Estep and
Leighton Dodt. The Leafs finished second of the seven teams in their race.
Bruno Kipsang ran next for Goshen, setting a school record in the 800 meters. He finished second in his section with a time of 1:53.40, topping Lucas Harnish's school record time of 1:53.93 set in 2014. Kipsang was just shy of the NAIA B standard of 1:51.92.
Leighton Dodt had a time of 1:58.09 in his race.
Jacob Friesen was in last place in his section of the 1,500 meters, passed all of his competition in the span of 150 meters, and then fell back again, finishing the race in 4:15.27.
Drew Hogan had a time of 4:06.68 in his section.
Next was
Mathew Keitany in the 3,000-meter steeplechase invite. Keitany achieved the NAIA B standard by running the race in a time of 9:20.61 - 2.39 seconds faster than the time he needed to beat. He finished fourth out of the 12 in his heat.
There will be three Maple Leafs competing on day two of the event on Saturday.
