Marion, Ind. – After sweeping doubles play in their last match, the Maple Leaf doubles teams couldn't gain any traction Saturday as Indiana Wesleyan proved to be too much for the visitors to overcome as Goshen fell 7-2, despite some highlight singles moments.
"Though Wesleyan is one of the better teams in Crossroads League," assessed head coach Stan King, "it was disappointing to lose this one and by as much as a 7-2 score. Our doubles play wasn't as sharp as it's been, unfortunately, as we lost all three and were down by a 0-3 team score going into singles."
The doubles highlight came from the # 2 team of Luis Perez and Vasanth Palanisamy who were broken on serve early in the first set, yet broke Wesleyan back to take a 6-5 lead. The duo was not able to win critical points down the stretch, however, and lost a tough 8-5 match.
Despite the disappointing team result, the Maple Leafs were able to post two impressive individual singles performances as Aritha Weerasinghe (#4) and Michael Oyer (#6) each fought through difficult matches to earn their wins.
After giving up the last 4 games of the first set to lose 6-3, Weerasinghe dug in and pulled out a 6-4 win in the second set before his opponent, Brandon DuBuque, was forced to retire due to a leg cramp. The win pushes Weerasinghe's singles record to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
Michel Oyer, in his first match as a Maple Leaf, earned the other singles win by a 6-4, 7-5 score at #6 singles. In the second set, Michael fell behind by a 2-4 score before taking four of the last five games to earn his first victory.
Coach King also praised the performance of Perez in a tough # 1 singles match against Kyle Johnson "who is arguably the best player in the league," according to King. "Luis played some great tennis on his way to winning the first set by a 6-2 score. Unfortunately, Kyle took charge in the second set and went on to win the third in a super tie-breaker."
The Maple Leafs are now 1-3 overall (1-1 Crossroads League) and head to Indianapolis Tuesday, Sept. 2nd to take on Marian University at 3:30 pm.
