Maple Leafs Run Into Deep Indiana Wesleyan Team

Goshen, Ind. - After starting the season with a strong win and a competitive Crossroads League loss, the Goshen women's tennis team ran into a talented and deep team of Wildcats that swept the field en route to a 9-0 win at the Goshen College tennis complex.

In their first week of early competition, the Maple Leafs have been playing well in several hard fought, close matches, but that all came to and end Saturday morning when Indiana Wesleyan proved to be too much for Goshen to handle.

Senior Anika Baumgartner (# 1 singles), along with fellow doubles partner junior Mimi Salvador (# 2 singles), currently lead the team in combined doubles and singles wins with 4 each (in 3 matches). "Though Anika lost her match today," assessed head Coach Doug Gossman, "she put together some excellent rallies and had many close games that didn't show up in the score." Also at # 4 singles, Maria Thomas played a hard fought first set at 6-3, before falling 6-0 in the second.

The Wildcats were led by Katie Wilson (# 1 doubles and singles) and Rachel Bottroff (# 2 doubles and singles) who each earned a doubles victory as well as a straight set singles victory.

Goshen is now 1-3 overall (0-2 Crossroads League) and will continue their current home stand Monday at 4:00 pm when they take on Marian University in a Crossroads League match up.
