SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — An 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles started the Maple Leaf women's tennis team off on the right foot, but host Spring Arbor cruised through the singles matches en route to an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon.
"Anika (Baumgartner) and Mimi (Noemi Salvador) had their best win of the season and played their best match," Goshen head coach Doug Gossman said afterward. With the Leaf duo up a break on Spring Arbor's Quincy Banini and Erin Hossack, Salvador served for the match and put Goshen ahead 1-0.
But the Cougars took both of the other doubles positions with ease, winning at no. 2 and no. 3 by identical 8-1 scores. And after SAU swept the six singles matches, that repeated doubles score doubled as the overall match score.
"Baumgartner lost a tough match in singles, and Joanna Epp played a great second set to lose 6-3 at no. 3," Gossman said. But with the Leafs taking no more than six games in any individual match, the writing for the final result was on the wall.
Spring Arbor raised its record to 5-1 in both the overall season and the Crossroads League; Goshen drops to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in league play. The Leafs will look for their first conference win on Wednesday in Upland, Ind., when they travel to Taylor University for a 4 p.m. match.
