Singles Sweep Lets Leafs Cruise Past Ravens

ANDERSON, Ind. — A non-conference match against an opponent whose principal season is in the spring might be the setup for nonchalance. Not so for the Maple Leaf men's tennis team, which swept all six singles matches en route to an 8-1 win Saturday at NCAA Division III Anderson University.

Goshen's dominance started at the top, where Balazs Pirot and Vasanth Palanisamy won every game of their no. 1 doubles match. Palanisamy repeated that feat in no. 2 singles, while Pirot lost only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win. With the victory, Pirot remains undefeated in four individual matches since returning from an injury last week.

The Leafs took the next two singles matches by identical scores, as Aritha Weerasinghe and Taylor Ermoian prevailed at no. 3 and no. 4 singles, respectively, with 6-1, 6-2 victories.

Even the match Goshen lost went all the way to the wire: Michael Oyer and Joel Gerig, playing at no. 3 doubles, forced a tiebreak that took more than the conventional 12 points before falling 9-8(6).

Goshen's first non-conference win of the season pulls its record back above .500 at 5-4. The Leafs presently sit two games ahead of Huntington for the fourth position in the Crossroads League standings, a spot they will look to protect when they host Taylor Wednesday afternoon.
