UPLAND, Ind. — A straight-set win from Noemi Salvador at no. 2 singles was not enough to lead the Goshen women's tennis team to victory Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a 7-2 decision on the road at Taylor University.
Salvador's 6-1, 6-2 victory was the Leafs' lone singles point, with two more matches seeing the Leafs fall in third-set super tiebreaks. At no. 1 singles, Anika Baumgartner won the first set before dropping the second and falling 10-8 in the third-set proxy; meanwhile at no. 4 singles, Maria Thomas stormed back from a one-set deficit with a 6-0 second-set win to force the tiebreaker, which she lost 10-4.
"Everyone played well tonight and we're showing signs of improvement," said Maple Leaf coach Doug Gossman. "Noemi cruised, Anika played a great match, and Maria played one of her better matches of the year as well."
Taylor jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles segment, with the Leafs' point coming at no. 2 where Thomas and Joelle Friesen picked up their first conference doubles win, 8-3 over Kammer and Jones. Goshen nearly picked up a point at no. 1 doubles as well, where Salvador and Baumgartner took the match to 6-6 before getting broken in their final service game.
The loss drops Goshen to 1-8 on the season, with an 0-7 Crossroads League mark good for ninth place. While the Maple Leafs would find themselves on the outside of the conference tournament looking in if the season ended now, the season does not end now. The Leafs' final conference match is against one of the two teams immediately ahead of them -- with a win and some help, the Crossroads League tourney is still on the table.
Goshen wraps up its conference slate in its next match when Grace pays a visit on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
