WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team saw its conference season conclude Tuesday afternoon in an 8-1 loss to Grace on the Lancers' home courts.
The Maple Leafs took their point at no. 2 singles, where Noemi Salvador defeated Kristen Cassidy 6-3, 6-2. "Salvador played a great match to beat their number-one player from last year," said Maple Leaf head coach Doug Gossman.
A position above, Anika Baumgartner pushed the Lancers' Natalia Kurkova to the limit, playing a succession of tight individual games but not breaking through to take the match in a 6-2, 6-2 loss. And two positions down the ladder at no. 4, Maria Thomas managed to take six games in a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.
But in doubles, Kurkova and Cassidy cruised to an 8-2 win; Thomas and Joelle Friesen mustered five games at no. 4, but it wasn't enough to put another team point on the scoreboard.
The Leafs' record falls to 1-9 on the season, with their 0-8 Crossroads League mark leaving them one game out of the final playoff position. Goshen wraps up its fall schedule with a pair of non-conference matchups -- the first, against Trine University, is set for 4 p.m. Thursday.
