Summit City Unkind To Maple Leaf Women

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team lost a 9-0 decision to the University of St. Francis in Crossroads League action Saturday morning in Fort Wayne.

The host Cougars started off strong, dropping only three games across the three doubles matches. They picked up a fourth team point when Noemi Salvador retired with an injury two games into her second set at no. 1 doubles.

Those four points meant that Goshen would have needed to win all five remaining matches to claim the victory. When St. Francis won the first set in each such contest, the odds of a Maple Leaf comeback appeared grim. Lynnia Noel at no. 3 singles and Chloe Woodward at no. 4 each came back to within one service break, but each dropped their matches by matching 6-0, 6-3 score lines.

"I was pleased to see Lynnia and Chloe make their comebacks," said Goshen head coach Doug Gossman. "Megan Eigsti also played one of her best matches of the season at no. 6 singles."

Ultimately, it was not enough for Goshen to pull out a win: with only nine Crossroads League institutions sponsoring women's tennis, however, the Maple Leafs could qualify for the league tournament with as little as one win.

Goshen drops to 0-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Crossroads League. The Maple Leafs wrap up their three-match road trip on Tuesday afternoon when they visit Huntington for a 4 p.m. match.
