GOSHEN, Ind. — The quest for the first win of the Goshen College women's tennis season continued Saturday morning when the Maple Leafs dropped a 9-0 Crossroads League decision to Spring Arbor University at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.
The hosting Cougars took all six singles matches in straight sets. Goshen welcomed no. 1 player Noemi Salvador back to the lineup after missing a match due to injury. Spring Arbor (3-2, 3-2 Crossroads League) was less kind to Salvador, as she lost 6-3, 6-0 to Quincy Bernini in singles action.
"It was a plus to have [Salvador] back so we could shift everyone else back down a spot," said Goshen head coach Doug Gossman, whose team is also without the services of no. 2 player Kendra Lozano. "But when you're in your first match coming off an injury, you never quite know how close you are to full strength."
Abby Banning came the closest to winning a set in her singles match, dropping the 11th and 12th games to fall 7-5 to Morgan Keeler in the first set. The Cougars allowed Goshen to win only two games across the board in doubles.
"I was pleased with the way Abby started her match, but obviously less so with the way it finished," said Gossman. "The challenge now is to string several of those performances together from set to set and player to player."
Goshen falls to 0-7 on the season and 0-6 in conference play, where the Maple Leafs would need a win in at least one of their last two matches to make the eight-team CL tournament. Goshen hosts Taylor on Tuesday in the first of those matches: first serve is set for 4 p.m.
