Maple Leafs Drop Conference Match At Taylor

UPLAND, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis lost in its attempt for a first win of the Crossroads League season Tuesday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 decision on the road at Taylor University.

Lynnia Noel's performance at no. 2 singles served as a bright spot: the junior won five consecutive games in the second set before losing by a 6-1, 7-5 score.

The Trojans got off to a hot start by sweeping the three doubles matches, dropping only a single game (won by Noemi Salvador and Joelle Friesen at no. 1 singles) in the process. Salvador did not play the singles portion of the match after aggravating an injury in doubles: with usual no. 2 player Kendra Lozano also out, Goshen defaulted at no. 6 singles and played the usual no. 3 through no. 7 players two spots higher than usual.

Abby Banning won a pair of service games in the second set of her match as well before falling 6-0, 6-2 at no. 4 singles. All things considered, however, the Trojans cruised through the five singles matches actually played to improve to 3-3 in conference play.

The Maple Leafs drop to 0-7 in CL action and 0-8 for the season as a whole. Goshen has the bye on the conference schedule this weekend, since only eight of the nine teams can play each other on a given date. Purdue University Calumet fills the open date on the Maple Leafs' schedule, with first serve set for 2:30 p.m. at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.
