MARION, Ind. -- The Goshen College men's tennis team earned a trio of singles victories, including two in straight sets, Tuesday night, but Indiana Wesleyan used the momentum from a doubles sweep to claim a 6-3 win in the Crossroads League tournament quarterfinals at the Sutter Tennis Center in Marion.

The Maple Leafs (4-9, 3-5) nearly salvaged a doubles point at the second position, where senior Aritha Weerasinghe and freshman Luke Rush dropped the first four games before winning six in a row and getting within one point of a 7-4 lead. Unfortunately for Goshen, their opponents also had a comeback in them and claimed the eight-game pro set 8-6.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 4-0 in the best-of-nine team match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at no. 6 singles. Just as quickly, Juan Miguel Ciudad earned Goshen's first team point on his fifth match point in a 6-3, 6-0 win two spots up the lineup.

Another straight-set IWU win, this one at no. 5 singles, officially ended Goshen's hopes of reaching the conference tournament final for the second consecutive season. But on this day, it also seemed to spark the remaining GC players: the loss was followed by Weerasinghe polishing off a win at no. 1 singles and Kartikeya Sharma claiming a 10-6 match-tiebreaker decision at no. 3.

"While I'm obviously disappointed in the results, I'm happy with the effort," said Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson. "We needed to perform better in doubles, which has been our Achilles heel all year and makes singles more difficult because we're playing from behind. But #2 doubles played its best stretch of the season and it was good to split singles."
