SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — The Goshen College women's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Spring Arbor University Wednesday evening at the Jones Tennis Complex in southern Michigan.
The GC duo of Elsie Koop Liechty and Mezrae Watt were able to squeak out one game in their 8-1 loss at the no. 2 doubles slot just one match after their best showing of the season. Kyra Krall also chipped a game for the Leafs (0-6, 0-6 CL) in her 6-0, 6-1 loss to SAU's Bri VanRavenswaay at the no. 5 singles position.
All other matches were decided in straight sets, with Spring Arbor (5-1, 5-1 CL) claiming two victories by default as the Maple Leaf lineup included five players rather than the usual six.
In addition to VanRavenswaay, Monika Wynne and Barbara Haikal each won twice for SAU.
"Our women continue to grow in how they produce their shots, construct points, and take advantage of opponents' mistakes," said Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson. "We are winning more points and playing at a higher level, and I was incredibly pleased with the effort on all the courts. We need to continue to learn and gain experience from playing these matches to help us in the future."
The win for the Cougars places them in a tie for second place in conference standings just one game behind Indiana Wesleyan University.
The loss eliminates the Goshen women from the chance to host a Crossroads League tournament match—if the Maple Leafs win all three remaining matches, they could finish as high as a tie for fifth place, although tiebreakers mean that the team will not be seeded higher than seventh.
The Goshen loss leaves them in ninth place in the conference standings, one-half game ahead of 0-7 Mount Vernon Nazarene. The two teams will face off next Tuesday in Ohio to separate the deadlock, but Goshen will first return to action this Saturday in a CL match against visiting Taylor University at 11 a.m.
