Weather Hot, Taylor Hotter; GC Blanked On 90-Degree Saturday

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College won a pair of games at each doubles match but progressed no further Saturday in a 9-0 women's tennis loss to Taylor University on the GC courts.

Taylor got wins from seven players at the seven contested positions to keep pace with Huntington in the loss column of the Crossroads League standings. The Trojans (8-2, 6-2) are third in the conference at the end of play, trailing Marian by half a game and leading HU and Spring Arbor by the same margin.

Chloe Woodward paced Goshen (0-7, 0-7) with three games on the day between the top singles and doubles spots.

"Our women are improving every time they step on the court," said Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson. "They are getting more accustomed to the pace of the college game and are able to stay in points for longer periods of time, making better shots. Every step counts for us and we continue to move forward."

Molly Fletchall and Mikayla Schultz were double winners for Taylor, combining to win at no. 1 doubles before repeating the trick at first and third singles respectively.

The Maple Leafs enter their final two regular-season matches needing to win both and have Bethel lose to Grace on Friday to force a tie for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament. Fortunately for Goshen, one of its two remaining matches is against the league's other remaining winless team, Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Unfortunately for Atkinson and his charges, that match is at Mount Vernon Nazarene; Goshen makes the road trip to Ohio to play the Cougars at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
