MOUNT VERNON, Ohio —Brandon Nguyen claimed his first two varsity-level tennis victories on Tuesday as the Goshen College men knocked off Mount Vernon Nazarene 9-0 at MVNU's Ramser Courts.

Nguyen paired with Joel Gerig at no. 3 doubles to post an 8-2 win that was each player's first career victory. That match represented half of the games that Goshen (6-4, 5-3 Crossroads League) would lose in doubles play as Mount Vernon Nazarene (1-12, 0-9) mustered only single games at the other two spots.

While GC's top three singles spots and number-one doubles position remained intact, the team used four usual reserves to fill out its lineup against an MVNU program that is restarting after a 24-year hiatus. Byeong Min Lim posted his first career doubles win, teaming with Eric Zuercher at the no. 2 spot, while Ben Fox joined the fun with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 5 singles.

The Cougars claimed no more than five games in any singles match as Goshen won five of the 12 sets 6-0 and another four 6-1. Between their singles and doubles matches, the Maple Leafs' top doubles team of Juan Miguel Ciudad and Kartikeya Sharma won 20 games and lost 1.

Huntington's defeat of Spring Arbor at HU on Friday leaves Goshen alone in fifth place in the 10-team CL; the Maple Leafs are a game behind a three-way tie for second between Marian, Spring Arbor and Huntington. The top six teams conclude their seasons on Friday or Saturday, with either Marian or SAU assured of adding a seventh conference win in their head-to-head matchup Friday.

Goshen concludes its regular season on Saturday by hosting Huntington at 11 a.m.; if the Maple Leafs win, they will host a first-round match next week in the conference tournament, while a loss would drop GC to the fifth seed and send the team to Marian or Spring Arbor. Goshen can finish no lower than fifth in the conference, something it has achieved for the fourth time in five years.
