Spring Arbor too much for Goshen women

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team saw its bid for a second Crossroads League victory come up short against Spring Arbor University as the Cougars topped the Maple Leafs 9-0 Saturday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Hannah Behm claimed a 6-0 first set for the Maple Leafs (2-6, 1-5) at no. 3 singles, but Spring Arbor's Morgan Summons bounced back to win the final two sets and take the match.

The Cougars (3-5, 3-5) had won all three doubles matches: Victoria Oakes and Chloe Woodward posted an 8-3 challenge at no. 1 to pace the Maple Leaf duos.

All seven Maple Leafs who saw action got on the scoreboard at some point, including Mags Dutchersmith, who played at no. 3 doubles with Natalie Iholtz, and no. 6 singles player Ashley Arroyo. Behm's nine games won in singles action was a team high.

The Maple Leafs maintained their eighth-place conference standing Saturday as Saint Francis lost to Bethel and Mount Vernon Nazarene was shut out at Marian. When conference play concludes next week, the top eight teams reach the conference tournament.

Quotable:

Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson:
"Our women played hard while ultimately losing to a talented Spring Arbor team. We've improved a lot over the course of the season, even if our scores are might not be indicative of that comment. I'm still proud of our effort across all courts and it's clear to me that we are trying to make good decisions on every ball. I'm looking forward to our next match."
