UPLAND, Ind. — A singles sweep set the stage for the fourth postseason home match in four years as Goshen College knocked off Taylor University 8-1 in men's tennis on the TU campus on Wednesday.
The Maple Leafs (7-1, 6-1) started the match with a pair of doubles victories, as Danny Boussom and Martim Cafe recorded an 8-2 win at the top spot and Josh Friesen and Luke Rush quickly added another by the same margin at no. 3. Victor Cheng and Salvador LoCascio foiled Goshen's plans for a doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at no. 2.
That doubles win meant that the Trojans (3-8, 3-5) needed four of the six singles matches to claim victory. Not only did Goshen prevent that from happening, but the Maple Leafs claimed all 12 singles sets, dropping two games or fewer in half of them.
Ciudad and Evan Beck both led the Maple Leafs by dropping single games in wins at no. 2 and no. 6 singles respectively, although their scorelines differed because Ciudad blanked his opponent in the first set while Beck did so in the second.
Boussom became the third Maple Leaf of the afternoon to post a 6-0 set, turning that trick at no. 1 singles in a 6-0, 6-4 win over Christen Jacquottet.
The Maple Leafs got revenge on both members of the doubles team that recorded Taylor's point, although the composition of each team's lineup meant that Boussom and Jacquottet were the only opponents to square off twice on the day. Friesen and Cheng played the day's only tiebreak at no. 5 singles, with Friesen winning 7-5 to back up a 6-2 first-set win, while Cafe topped LoCascio by one break twice in a 7-5, 6-4 win.
The victory ensured Goshen of a top-four finish in the Crossroads League and a home match in next week's conference tournament: Goshen previously hosted in 2014 and twice in 2015, when the Maple Leafs were tournament runners-up. GC sits second in the standings and could still reach a tie for first with wins over Indiana Wesleyan and Saint Francis.
