UPLAND, Ind. — One day after Mother Nature rained out a scheduled match and forced the Goshen College women's tennis team to wrap up its regular season with four matches in four days, the Maple Leafs dropped a 9-0 match to Taylor University on Wednesday at the TU courts.
Hannah Behm and Mags Dutchersmith posted the best result for the Maple Leafs (2-7, 1-6) in doubles action, an 8-2 loss at the no. 2 spot, as Taylor took a 3-0 lead after that segment of competition.
In singles action, Goshen took three or more games in a set in four of the matches, with Dutchersmith getting as close as 6-4 in her first set at no. 6, but Taylor ultimately claimed all six matches in straight sets. Chloe Woodward and Natalie Iholtz each took three games in their second set for matching 6-1, 6-3 scores, while Hannah Behm matched that output in her first set at the no. 3 spot.
The Trojans (8-4, 6-3) concluded their Crossroads League regular season in a three-way tie for third place. Among TU players who played both singles and doubles, Molly Fletchall posted the best record by winning 20 of her 21 games.
Despite the defeat, Goshen maintained its 8th-place standing in the Crossroads League even after Saint Francis topped Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday. When the season ends Saturday evening, the top eight teams qualify for next week's conference tournament.
