MARION, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team concluded the road portion of its Crossroads League schedule Thursday at Indiana Wesleyan University in a 9-0 defeat.
The Wildcats (11-0, 9-0) entered the day with their sights set on the conference crown for the 26th time since 1991 and moved through doubles intent on making that a reality. Victoria Oakes and Chloe Woodward stood in the way to the tune of one game at no. 1 doubles, but Indiana Wesleyan led 3-0 at the end of that segment of the match.
Both teams used the same six players in singles that they did in doubles, and the results proved similar as the Wildcats took all six matches in straight sets. As the hosts finished the conference's round-robin schedule, IWU posted its seventh straight home shutout in CL competition
The loss moves Goshen into a tie for eighth place with Saint Francis: the Maple Leafs and Cougars both sit at 1-7 in conference play. Saturday's conference finale between the two teams will separate them as they vie for the eighth and ninth spots in the final Crossroads League standings.
With a win Saturday, Goshen would reach the conference tournament for the first time since the current team format was instituted in 2010.
Quoting Goshen director of tennis Evan Atkinson:
"IWU is a perennial power in our conference and we loved the opportunity to compete against them. That match was one sided but I was pleased to see our women eager for the challenge. We'll continue to improve with the right mentality in these tough outings."
