GOSHEN, Ind. — Chloe Woodward and Hannah Behm posted a pair of victories at no. 1 doubles in an unorthodox lineup, but the Goshen College women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Saint Francis and a 6-3 match to Roosevelt on Saturday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The morning started innocently enough for the Maple Leafs (2-10, 1-8) against Saint Francis, with the winner of the match destined for the eighth seed in next week's Crossroads League tournament. With the men playing at the same time, the women's match began with singles play in a concession to the number of available courts.
Behm earned Goshen's first singles victory of the day in a three-set win at no. 3 singles: the freshman bounced back from a first-set loss to claim the second set in a tiebreaker and reeled off the third set match tiebreaker as well, winning 17 of 20 points at one juncture to claim the team point.
Unfortunately for GC, Behm's match only went to the 10-point tiebreaker because the team match had been decided, with the Cougars taking the other five singles matches and one doubles point before singles play had finished. The Leafs' Victoria Oakes was forced to retire five games into the match at no. 1, while Saint Francis posted three other straight-set wins. Chloe Woodward at no. 2 and Ashley Arroyo at no. 6 each got as close as 6-5 in their final-set tiebreaks before falling for Goshen.
Behm and Woodward used a late break of serve to claim victory for Goshen at no. 1 doubles, with Behm sliding into Oakes' spot on the top line. Saint Francis won at no. 2 and claimed a default at no. 3.
The victory sent Saint Francis into the conference tournament, where the Cougars will take on top seed Indiana Wesleyan next Tuesday.
All six singles matches ended in straight sets in the evening match, a non-conference affair against a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe that plays its conference slate in the spring. The addition of Mags Dutchersmith put Goshen back to a full lineup, with Dutchersmith claiming a 6-4, 6-3 win over Meryem Ahmed in the most competitive match of the day.
Continuing a theme from the morning, Behm won both of her matches against the Lakers, blanking Kyla Faton in the second set at no. 2 singles and recording an 8-4 victory at no. 1 doubles as she again paired with Woodward.
In the final home match of her senior fall season, Woodward returned to the no. 1 singles position that she occupied last season and dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Gina Odisho.
