Maple Leafs drop barnburner to Grace Christian in first head-to-head meeting

GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's tennis team wrapped up its spring season Friday with a 5-4 loss to Grace Christian University at the Goshen College Tennis Complex.

The Maple Leafs (2-14) got their wins at the top of the lineup, with Victoria Oakes and Hannah Behm doubling up on victories at the top spots. Behm surrendered three games while winning 12 at no. 2 singles, and Oakes' win was only marginally closer at the top spot where she won 6-2, 6-3. The pair also posted an 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles.

With just four players available in the non-traditional season, the Maple Leafs defaulted three matches, giving the Tigers (1-6) a 3-0 lead before play even began. Grace Christian added a win at no. 2 doubles, setting the lead at 4-1 after that segment of competition.

The match came down to a pair of third sets at no. 3 and no. 4 singles, which were shortened to super tiebreaks due to blustery conditions that pushed wind chills into the upper 30s. Kyra Krall prevailed 10-6 at no. 3, but the match had been sealed as Hailey Petty earned Grace's fifth point with a 10-7 win at no. 4.
